The National Museum of the American Indian, New York is recruiting for Visitor Information Specialist Volunteers in our historic Alexander Hamilton US Customs House building on Bowling Green, Lower Manhattan. NMAI-NY is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum, education, and research complex.
If you believe in our vision for "Equity and social justice for the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere through education, inspiration, and empowerment," this volunteer opportunity is for you.
As a Visitor Information Specialist Volunteer at NMAI-NY, you will welcome our visitors from around the world, answer questions about Native content, and provide essential information about exhibitions, community programs, and services. You will help visitors plan a memorable experience engaging with a wide array of Indigenous objects, regalia, and interactive media. You will inform visitors about museum activities so they might participate in NMAI-NY programs such as film screenings, live performances, cultural demonstrations, and educational activities-designed for audiences of all ages.
Volunteers will receive training before they begin. The onboarding training consists of at-home reading assignments, one-day in-person training, and virtual orientations related to the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of the American Indian and the position. Ongoing enrichments, daily catchups, and community programs continue the learning about Native content, culture, traditions, and history.
We ask volunteers for a minimum commitment of one year. Applications are accepted through March 2026. There are several openings for placement in Spring-Summer, 2026.
