The Well of Mercy is a nonprofit, transitional housing program providing safe, stable housing and a pathway to independence for women and their children in Chicago. Our residents can stay for up to five years while completing education, securing employment, and rebuilding their lives. Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, organized Volunteer Team Lead to help guide and support the volunteers who keep The Well running smoothly. Volunteers play a vital role in childcare, household support, administrative tasks, events, and donation coordination. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys people, service, and building community while strengthening the impact of a mission-driven nonprofit.
This is an unpaid volunteer leadership role with flexible hours.
What You'll Do
- Recruit and onboard volunteers by welcoming new members, providing orientation, and helping them feel comfortable and confident in their roles
- Coordinate volunteer schedules to ensure coverage for childcare, nursery help, donation sorting, administrative support, tutoring, and other ongoing needs
- Support, guide, and encourage volunteers through regular check-ins, clear communication, and problem-solving
- Maintain volunteer records including hours, roles, and engagement notes
- Develop appreciation initiatives to recognize and celebrate volunteers' contributions
- Collaborate with staff and leadership to understand evolving needs and match volunteers with meaningful roles
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where volunteers feel valued, respected, and connected to the mission
What We're Looking For
- Strong people skills, warmth, and the ability to make others feel welcome
- Good organization and communication skills
- Comfort managing schedules, messages, and follow-through
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Interest in supporting women and children rebuilding their lives
- Prior experience with volunteers, human services, childcare, or nonprofit work is a plus (not required)
Time Commitment
Flexible schedule, Part-time. Depending on volunteer needs, orientation sessions, and events.
