    Description

bilingual in Spanish's Grant writer for a Hispanic with kids with DMD

    Grant Writer (Volunteer, Remote)

The Akari Foundation is a small nonprofit organization seeking an experienced grant writer to support our mission of raising awareness and improving access to education and resources for Hispanic families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare, progressive neuromuscular disease that primarily affects boys, occurring in approximately 1 in 3,500 to 5,000 male births. Early diagnosis is critical, as it allows individuals to access timely care and interventions that can improve quality of life. In Hispanic communities, signs and symptoms are often missed or misunderstood, leading to delayed diagnosis and reduced access to care.

Our goal is to reach undiagnosed, newly diagnosed, and previously diagnosed Spanish-speaking families to educate, inform, and connect them with trusted, culturally and linguistically appropriate resources.

The grant writer will work directly with the Founder to identify prospective funding opportunities and prepare competitive grant proposals. This role focuses on securing one-time and recurring funding from government agencies, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and private and public foundations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Identify and research grant funding opportunities aligned with the organization’s mission.
    • Write, submit, and manage grant proposals under the direction of the Founder.
    • Maintain strong knowledge of the organization’s history, programs, and impact.
    • Prepare and provide supporting documentation to prospective funders
    • Track and report the status of all submitted grant applications
    • Maintain organized records using internal systems and external grant databases.
    • Cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with grant-making organizations.
    • Coordinate with the Treasurer to track records related to incentive or performance-based compensation when applicable.
    • Build and cultivate relationships with local, state, and federal appointed and elected officials when relevant to funding opportunities
    • Support efforts to secure local, state, and federal grants and other government funding
    • Commit a minimum of five hours per week to grant writing responsibilities.
    • Perform additional related duties as needed.

    Position Details

This is a volunteer, remote position with no direct client or family contact. As the organization secures funding, there may be opportunities for paid work and internal growth based on performance and organizational capacity.

    Requirements

    • Access to a PC or desktop computer
    • Reliable phone and internet access
    • Strong writing, research, and organizational skills
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote environment
