    Description

    Description

We Are NEXT, an all‑volunteer 501(c)(4) organization, is seeking a volunteer WordPress System Lead to own and maintain our public web platform. This role is ideal for someone with hands‑on WordPress administration experience who wants to support a mission‑driven civic organization working on policy development, democracy, and community engagement.

The WordPress System Lead will support content publishing, plugin and theme maintenance, updates, performance, troubleshooting, and basic security hygiene while partnering closely with the marketing and communications team.

Because We Are NEXT operates with a small volunteer systems team, this role will also serve as the backup operator for Google Workspace. The Google Workspace System Lead will back up this role in turn, with paired onboarding and shared documentation so coverage is dependable.

    Responsibilities

    • Own and maintain the We Are NEXT WordPress website, including content updates, page publishing, plugin and theme maintenance, routine updates, troubleshooting, performance checks, and basic security hygiene
    • Partner with marketing, communications, operations, and volunteer leaders to publish public content, volunteer information, event materials, newsletters, campaign updates, and organizational announcements
    • Support page formatting, site navigation, link review, media library use, accessibility, mobile responsiveness, SEO basics, forms, analytics, and brand consistency
    • Monitor site health, plugin compatibility, backups, user permissions, broken links, outdated information, and basic security settings
    • Create and maintain documentation, runbooks, update logs, request workflows, and basic operating procedures so another volunteer can step in when needed
    • Participate in paired onboarding and cross‑training with the Google Workspace System Lead, including basic user support, shared‑drive access, groups, onboarding, offboarding, and escalation steps

    Qualifications

    • Hands‑on experience administering or maintaining WordPress websites, including hosting, plugins, themes, updates, pages, menus, forms, media libraries, and basic site settings
    • Comfort troubleshooting common WordPress issues independently and knowing when to escalate hosting, security, or technical concerns
    • Strong attention to detail, follow‑through, documentation habits, and comfort working in a remote volunteer‑led environment
    • Ability to partner with nontechnical volunteers and explain website decisions, risks, tradeoffs, and recommended next steps in plain language
    • Willingness to learn the basics of Google Workspace administration as part of a cross‑trained systems coverage model
    • Helpful but not required: web design, front‑end skills, accessibility experience, SEO basics, analytics, Google Workspace familiarity, DNS awareness, CRM integrations, forms, newsletter tools, nonprofit communications, advocacy, civic, grassroots, or volunteer‑led organizations

    What Success Looks Like

    • We Are NEXT’s public website is reliable, current, secure, accessible, and easier for volunteers and leaders to maintain
    • Marketing and communications content is published accurately, consistently, and in alignment with We Are NEXT’s tone and public‑facing standards
    • Website requests, updates, plugin maintenance, access practices, and basic site‑health checks are organized, documented, and completed in a timely way
    • Cross‑training with the Google Workspace System Lead creates real backup coverage and reduces single‑person dependency
    • The website supports volunteer recruitment, public education, events, credibility, and organizational growth

    Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a practical platform owner who enjoys keeping websites clean, reliable, and useful. You do not need to be a full‑stack developer, but you should be comfortable owning a WordPress environment, documenting your work, making thoughtful recommendations, and helping a growing volunteer organization present itself professionally online.
