Description
About Virtual Hospitals Africa (VHA)
Virtual Hospitals Africa (VHA) is an innovative digital health initiative dedicated to closing the healthcare equity gap across underserved regions. By developing open-source modules, clinical decision support systems, and digital health tools specifically engineered for rural and low-resource primary care clinics, VHA empowers frontline healthcare workers to deliver accurate, life-saving care.
As we advance our 2026 clinical validation pilots in Southern Africa and expand our research collaborations with key institutional partners, we are seeking a highly strategic, mission-driven fundraising leader to help us build a resilient global funding ecosystem.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Volunteer Strategic Advisor – Global Health Philanthropy & Fundraising to serve as a key thought partner to our executive team. This is a high-level advisory and governance role designed for someone deeply embedded in the international philanthropy landscape. Instead of executing day-to-day administrative tasks, you will provide the strategic vision, structural guidance, and network positioning required to unlock multi-sector funding streams.
If you are passionate about universal health coverage, open-source medical technology, and systemic social impact, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the financial architecture of an organization poised to transform rural healthcare delivery.
Key Advisory Responsibilities
- Strategic Funding Roadmap: Advise on building and diversifying a multi-tiered funding model across international grant frameworks (e.g., bilateral aid, global health foundations), venture philanthropy, and high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs).
- Proposal & Pitch Elevation: Review and refine concept notes, grant expressions of interest (EOIs), and investor memorandums to ensure our clinical and technical value propositions resonate deeply with sophisticated global donors.
- Consortium & Partner Positioning: Guide VHA on how to best leverage and position our existing academic, clinical, and institutional research partnerships to maximize funder appeal.
- Donor Cultivation Strategy: Provide best-practice guidance on donor stewardship, navigation of complex foundation governance structures, and building long-term relationships within the global health funding ecosystem.
Qualifications & Experience
- Philanthropic Expertise: 5+ years of demonstrated success within international development, healthcare philanthropy, global health grantmaking, or strategic fundraising.
- Ecosystem Insight: A deep understanding of what modern institutional foundations, trust funds, and impact investors prioritize when evaluating technology-driven healthcare interventions.
- Strategic Communication: Exceptional ability to conceptualize complex digital health and clinical initiatives and translate them into compelling, fundable narratives.
- Values Alignment: A strong commitment to the belief that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and an enthusiasm for leveraging open-source technology to build public goods.
Position Details & Benefits
- Commitment: Part-time and highly flexible, averaging 2 to 5 hours per week. This role is entirely remote, allowing you to contribute from anywhere globally.
- Nature of Role: This is a pro-bono, volunteer advisory position.
- What We Offer: A collaborative, leadership-level seat within an agile and rapidly growing health-tech initiative, an opportunity to work alongside passionate clinical and technical experts, and a platform to drive measurable, life-saving impact in underserved rural communities.
