    Description

    Who We Are

Unruled Masses is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is building new and dynamic public civic intelligence and direct action infrastructure for peaceful civic engagement. These tools enable ordinary people to expose abuse patterns, map corruption networks and coordinate civic engagement and community building worldwide. We are nonpartisan, guided by evidence, grounded in human rights, and partner-focused to support pro-democratic coalitions. UM seeks to unite people and partners with intelligence, materials and communications to rebuild connected and hopeful communities where institutions are accountable to the people.

    Who You Are

You are a proactive and detail-oriented professional who understands that strong security systems are foundational to trust, safety, and operational integrity. You take ownership of systems and think ahead to prevent risks before they become problems.

You may have a background in cybersecurity, IT, or systems administration, or you may be building experience in this space. You are comfortable working independently, but you also value collaboration and contributing to a mission-driven organization.

    What You’ll Do

As an IT Security Manager, you will:

    • Assess current systems and identify potential vulnerabilities
    • Implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices
    • Manage user access, permissions, and authentication controls
    • Ensure secure handling and storage of organizational data
    • Support and secure collaboration tools such as Google Workspace and Slack
    • Advise leadership on risks and mitigation strategies
    • Help build scalable and secure infrastructure as the organization grows

    Exceptional volunteers may:

    • Develop long-term security policies and frameworks
    • Conduct system audits and risk assessments
    • Lead cybersecurity initiatives across teams
    • Mentor other volunteers on security best practices

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Experience or interest in cybersecurity, IT, or related fields
    • Understanding of data protection, access control, and risk management
    • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
    • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
    • Clear communication skills for explaining technical concepts

    Compensation & Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time commitments but ask for at least five hours a week to be able to provide any meaningful project / program. Those with higher availability and capability will be considered for team, program, or project leadership opportunities. We are an all-volunteer force. However, as fundraising allows we will need to fill paid positions and will provide first consideration to our volunteer leaders.

    • Gain hands-on experience securing systems in a mission-driven environment
