Since 1984, the formal gardens located at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site have been maintained by the volunteers of the Frederick W. Vanderbilt Garden Association, a not-for-profit organization. The FWVGA plants thousands of annuals each year and maintains many perennial and rose beds.
Garden volunteers perform the full range of gardening activities such as planting, weeding, pruning and using landscaping equipent. No previous gardening experience is required.
The FWVGA typically performs garden work between April and November each week within the gardening season. Activities take place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to noon. Volunteers do not need to commit to a specific schedule, and are invited to attend based upon their personal availability.
