    About Mentor A Promise

    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy development, enrichment programs, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and community-based innovation, MAP creates safe and empowering environments where young people can thrive.

    MAP’s PeoplePromise Division oversees volunteer HR systems, recruiting, onboarding, compliance, culture, training, engagement, rewards and recognition, retention, HR data, reporting and analytics across all MAP programs—MAP Roots, MAP Connect, PromisePress, Thread & Promise, PromisePlay, and more.

    About the Role

    We are seeking a Human Resources Director to help lead and strengthen MAP’s people operations as we expand our volunteer-driven workforce. This role supports the Director of Human Resources in overseeing HR systems, engagement, rewards and recognition, training, practices reporting to the CHRO

    This is a leadership position requiring strong judgment, excellent communication skills, and a deep commitment to equity-centered HR practices in a mission-driven nonprofit environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support CHRO in managing daily HR operations, including training, engagement, retention, rewards and recognition, HR data analytics and reporting.
    • Assist in developing and implementing HR workflow systems and organizational standards.
    • Help oversee HRIS systems, recordkeeping, and compliance documentation.
    • Coordinate with division leads to ensure volunteer and staff needs are met across MAP programs.
    • Support performance improvement processes, role clarity updates, and internal communication systems.
    • Support workplace culture initiatives focused on equity, trauma-informed practice, accessibility, and inclusion.
    • Contribute to internal training (HR, compliance, systems use, and organizational values).
    • Maintain clear documentation and track HR metrics (retention, timelines, etc.).
    • Collaborate with the Legal & Compliance team on confidentiality, ethics, and risk mitigation protocols.
    • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by integrating leadership feedback and proactively strengthening processes.

    Qualifications

    • Experience in human resources and people management.
    • Strong understanding of HR systems and compliance principles.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
    • Ability to manage sensitive information with confidentiality and integrity.
    • Organized, proactive, and comfortable coordinating across multiple teams and programs.
    • Commitment to equity, trauma-informed practice, and culturally responsive HR approaches.

    Bonus Skills (Not Required)

    • Knowledge of NYC/NYS labor and nonprofit HR frameworks.
    • Experience with HRIS, workflow systems, or data tracking.
    • Background in policy development or governance structures.

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role, 5–10 hours per week.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Remote: New York City and/or East Coast remote via Google Meet.
