Social Media Community Engagement Volunteer
Little Oaks Center for Neurodevelopment
Hybrid | Volunteer must be in or near New York, NY
Flexible, primarily remote | Approximately 5–10 hours per week
Role Overview
Little Oaks Center for Neurodevelopment is looking for a Social Media Community Engagement Volunteer to help us build meaningful relationships with families, caregivers, advocates, organizations, professionals, creators, and community voices through social media.
This role is less about creating content and more about being present in the community: finding relevant conversations, engaging thoughtfully with people and organizations, identifying potential connections, and helping Little Oaks build an authentic and trusted presence online.
You’ll help Little Oaks connect with people who care about neurodiversity, disability inclusion, child development, caregiving, education, family support, and related issues—and help turn those digital interactions into longer-term community relationships.
What You’ll Do
Community Engagement & Relationship Building
- Identify relevant community members, organizations, advocates, creators, influencers, professionals, and local businesses across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other relevant platforms.
- Engage thoughtfully with relevant posts, conversations, and community discussions through likes, comments, shares, and other appropriate interactions.
- Initiate authentic conversations with potential community partners, collaborators, advocates, and influencers through social media.
- Help build relationships with people whose work, audiences, or expertise align with Little Oaks’ mission.
- Follow up with promising connections and help move relationships from initial interaction toward deeper engagement.
- Monitor relevant conversations and trends within the neurodiversity, disability, parenting, education, and family-support communities.
- Identify opportunities for Little Oaks to participate in conversations, collaborate with others, amplify community voices, or share useful resources.
- Maintain organized notes on promising relationships, conversations, and potential opportunities.
Content & Community Support
- Help identify community stories, resources, conversations, and voices that Little Oaks should consider highlighting or amplifying.
- Share relevant content with the Little Oaks team and suggest opportunities for collaboration or cross-promotion.
- Support occasional social media posts or outreach messages when needed, using Little Oaks’ voice and guidelines.
- Help ensure our social presence feels responsive, human, and connected to the communities we serve.
What We’re Looking For
We’d love to work with someone who is:
- Naturally curious about people and communities.
- A thoughtful and respectful communicator.
- Comfortable engaging with people they don't already know online.
- Able to distinguish between authentic relationship-building and transactional outreach.
- Interested in neurodiversity, disability inclusion, caregiving, child development, education, or community support.
- Comfortable navigating Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and/or other social platforms.
- Reliable, organized, and able to follow through on conversations and connections.
- Able to represent Little Oaks professionally and thoughtfully online.
- Based in New York City or the surrounding area, with an interest in connecting with the local community.
Helpful Experience
This role may be a great fit if you have experience with:
- Social media community management or engagement.
- Influencer, creator, or partnership outreach.
- Community organizing or grassroots engagement.
- Nonprofit, advocacy, education, healthcare, parenting, or mission-driven organizations.
- Building relationships through social media or online communities.
- Identifying relevant voices, organizations, and partnership opportunities.
- Managing outreach pipelines, contact lists, or relationship-tracking systems.
Multilingual volunteers are especially welcome. The ability to communicate in languages other than English may be particularly valuable for community engagement, outreach, communications, and work supporting families from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
You do not need to be a professional social media manager or content creator. We are particularly interested in someone good at finding people, starting genuine conversations, and building relationships.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 5–10 hours per week.
- Flexible schedule, primarily remote.
- Occasional in-person presence in NYC is encouraged.
- Consistent weekly engagement is more important than a fixed schedule.
Growth Path
The volunteer may also have opportunities to take on greater ownership of influencer relationships, community partnerships, social strategy, or broader outreach initiatives.
