    Description

    Who We Are

Unruled Masses (UM) is a 501(c)(3), nonpartisan, public education and civic empowerment organization. Our mission is to research and expose abuses of power by public and private entities, educate the public on corruption and related harms, empower people to counter corruption through nonviolent and lawful civic action, and inspire hope through community.

We believe democracy is non-negotiable: we will never yield to authoritarian interests or abuses of power that violate democratic principles and harm our communities. And we believe hope lives in those who fight for a better tomorrow. When abusers use "divide and conquer" tactics, hopelessness is the intended outcome. UM exists to counter that by showing people that when they work together to reclaim their power and agency, they can defeat efforts to abuse and exploit them.

Our research is paired with specific actions ordinary people can take, and we share it through our website, newsletters, social media, and our Unruled Voices podcast. Everything we publish is grounded in credible sources, because we believe good information, not fear, is the foundation of action.

    Our Studio

We are building out a studio in Austin, Texas, and we need creative people to help us build online content for YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. We are looking for video creators and editors, and we are also interested in on-screen talent and people who can help with production. Whether you want to shape a story, appear on camera, or help make a shoot run smoothly, there is a place for you on our team.

    Who You Are

You are creative, disciplined, and motivated by truth, accountability, and public impact. You care deeply about fighting corruption and abuse of power, and you understand the power of video to inform, engage, and mobilize people responsibly.

You are comfortable working independently on creative production, but you value close collaboration with researchers, action coordinators, and communications staff. You enjoy translating complex, research-driven material into compelling visual stories that ordinary people can understand and act on, in plain language that is accessible to everyone.

You may come from video production, documentary storytelling, digital media, journalism, marketing, or the creative arts, or you may be building experience in these areas and looking for meaningful, real-world use of your skills. You don't need to be a lifelong activist. You do need to believe that good information deserves good storytelling.

What You'll Do as a Video Content Creator

    • Turn Research into Video: Collaborate with our researchers and civic action team to develop video concepts that accurately reflect our case studies, profiles, explainers, research briefs, and Action Playbooks.
    • Shape the Story: Help develop story ideas, narratives, and messaging for short-form video on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, and for longer-form content such as Unruled Voices podcast episodes and community training videos.
    • Plan Before You Shoot: Develop storyboards, scripts, and creative briefs for video projects.
    • Source Assets Responsibly: Find video footage, imagery, graphics, and other visual assets from ethical, appropriate, and properly credited sources.
    • Create Original Visuals: Design original graphics and visual assets that make complex ideas clear.
    • Edit and Publish: Edit video into polished, publish-ready pieces for social media, webcasts, and digital platforms.
    • Support Studio Production: Help with live and recorded production in our Austin studio, and with video for campaigns and community actions.
    • Protect Our Integrity: Make sure every video meets UM's standards for accuracy, nonviolence, and nonpartisanship, follows our editorial and legal review steps, cites credible sources, and transparently reports any use of AI.

Join our studio team: on-screen talent and production crew

Not every role is behind the editing desk. As our Austin studio takes shape, we are also interested in people who want to:

    • Appear on camera: Host, present, or interview guests for short explainers, series, and Unruled Voices episodes. You should be a clear, credible communicator who can explain corruption and civic action in plain language, with nonpartisan objectivity.
    • Help with production: Support shoots and live and recorded broadcasts as camera operators, audio or lighting support, producers, or production assistants, and help keep sessions organized and on schedule.

Experience is welcome but not required for every role. If you are not sure where you fit, tell us about your skills and interests when you apply.

    Exceptional volunteers may

    • Lead video production for major investigations or campaigns.
    • Help define UM's video storytelling style and formats.
    • Develop recurring video series or explainers.
    • Mentor newer video and creative volunteers.
    • Collaborate on cross-platform storytelling initiatives.

    Areas of Content Focus

Video content may support work related to: Corruption & Abuse of Power; Government Accountability; Corporate Exploitation; Labor & Workplace; Housing & Community Control; Policing & Public Safety; Elections & Voting; Digital Platforms & Algorithms; Media & Information Integrity; Surveillance & Data Exploitation; Environmental Justice; Health & Social Services; Civil Rights & Equality; Protest & Assembly; International Governance; Defense & Security; and Nonprofits & Philanthropy.

    Ideal Qualifications

    • Experience creating and editing video content for social, digital, or marketing channels, including short-form formats for YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
    • Familiarity with video editing tools and basic motion or graphic design workflows.
    • Strong storytelling instincts and the ability to translate complex information into clear, plain-language narratives.
    • Comfort sourcing footage, graphics, and assets responsibly.
    • Ability to collaborate across research, civic action, and communications teams.
    • Comfort working remotely with structured workflows and deadlines. Studio roles are based in Austin, Texas.
    • Experience with advocacy, journalism, nonprofit, or mission-driven content is a plus.
    • For on-screen talent: clear, confident presence on camera and a demonstrated commitment to nonpartisan, fact-based communication.
    • A demonstrated commitment to democracy, human rights, and the belief that organized, peaceful communities can hold power accountable.

    Compensation and Commitment

This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time commitments, but ask for at least 3–5 hours per week for production-level participation. Studio sessions in Austin will be scheduled in advance. As funding allows, paid positions may be offered in the future to exceptional volunteers.
