Support Grieving Families as a Hospice Bereavement Volunteer
Details
Description
Bereavement volunteers provide compassionate support to family members and loved ones following the death of a hospice patient. Through kind outreach, active listening, and a caring presence, volunteers help ensure that individuals and families feel supported throughout the grieving process. Volunteers may also assist with legacy projects, memory-making activities, and remembrance programs that help families celebrate, honor, and preserve the memories of their loved ones. Bereavement support is an essential component of hospice care and reflects our commitment to caring for families beyond the patient's death.
As a Bereavement volunteer with Autumn Hospice, you will extend the organization's compassionate care to family members and caregivers during their journey through grief. Through regular outreach, supportive conversations, and connections to approved resources, you will help individuals feel heard, understood, and less alone during a difficult time.
Bereavement volunteers are valued members of the hospice team who provide emotional, social, and practical support within a clearly defined non-clinical role. Depending on the assignment, volunteers may make phone calls, send cards or emails, prepare bereavement mailings and resource packets, assist with support groups, and help coordinate remembrance programs, memorial services, and other special events.
Bereavement volunteers serve under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator, with ongoing support from the Bereavement Coordinator and other members of the hospice interdisciplinary team.
