    Hospice Volunteer – Job Description

    Position Title: Hospice Volunteer

    Department: Volunteer Services

    Reports To: Volunteer Coordinator / Hospice Manager

    Status: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    Position Summary

    Hospice Volunteers provide compassionate support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing quality of life by offering companionship, emotional support, and practical assistance, while honoring patient dignity, comfort, and choice.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide companionship and emotional support to patients
    • Offer respite for caregivers through presence and support
    • Assist with non-medical activities such as reading, conversation, music, or light errands
    • Support families with emotional comfort and active listening
    • Participate in bereavement support activities, when appropriate
    • Assist hospice staff with clerical, administrative, or outreach tasks (optional)
    • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines
    • Document volunteer visits as required
    • Communicate concerns or observations to hospice staff promptly

    Qualifications

    • Must be at least 14 years of age
    • Compassionate, dependable, and emotionally mature
    • Ability to respect diverse cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles
    • Strong listening and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to maintain professional boundaries
    • Reliable transportation preferred

    Training & Requirements

    • Completion of hospice volunteer training program
    • Background check and TB screening (as required)
    • Commitment to hospice philosophy and policies
    • Ongoing education or in-service training, as required

    Time Commitment

    Flexible scheduling available. Typical commitment is 2–4 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months (may vary by agency).
