    Description

    Shelter Prep Cook Volunteer

    Volunteer Prep Cooks assist the Shelter Kitchen Specialist prep food to serve to our emergency shelter guests. The shelter provides a safe and dignified space for 22 women and 44 men every night. We provide housing advocacy, healthcare services, toiletry and basic clothing supplies, showers, lockers, and three meals a day. Our goal is to help our shelter guests move into safe, affordable, and stable housing as soon as possible.

    Timeframe

    This volunteer opportunity is available Monday through Friday, year-round. Volunteers may sign up for a afternoon shift (2 pm - 5 pm ). Volunteers are required to commit 2 shifts a month.

    Qualifications

    Simpson Housing Services is looking for responsible, reliable, and respectful volunteers who can work comfortably in a commercial kitchen and communicate with a people of diverse backgrounds. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

    Benefits

    The experience you gain as a volunteer will develop and hone skills that are useful in school, a career, and life. Working directly with a kitchen specialist, you will gain knowledge about kitchen tools, cooking for a large group, meal prepping, and menu planning. Upon your request, we will provide a letter of recommendation for school, work, or scholarship. Volunteers gain a deeper appreciation for their lifestyle and enjoy a new network of people by meeting shelter staff and other volunteers.

    Volunteer Process

    • Be sure to select "Prep Cook" from the drop-down menu under "Volunteer Position Interest."
    1. Katelyn Jaksha will contact you to schedule a 15-minute phone interview
    2. Attend a virtual orientation on the history and philosophies of Simpson Housing Services
    3. Complete a criminal background check
    4. Sign up for prep cook shift
    5. Commit to volunteering 2 shifts a month
