    Description

    Overview

    Augustine Literacy Project (ALP) trains and supports community volunteers to provide high-impact literacy tutoring to students in kindergarten through second grade who are behind in reading. Tutors work in partner public schools during the school day, helping children build foundational reading skills and confidence.

    This is a one-year volunteer commitment and a meaningful opportunity to make a measurable difference in a child’s life.

    Time Commitment & Schedule

    • Tutors serve at a specific partner school
    • Tutoring takes place on pre-set days and times each week, typically twice weekly for one hour per session
    • Tutoring occurs during the school day, most often in the morning
    • Tutors are part of a school-based cohort of up to 30 tutors and students
    • Commitment runs for one full school year

    Training & Support

    All tutors receive comprehensive preparation and ongoing support, including:

    • Tutor training on ALP’s structured literacy curriculum
    • Training on the technology and tools used during sessions
    • Child protection and safety training
    • Ongoing coaching and support from an ALP staff memberTutors report to the Student Success Coordinator (SSC), the ALP staff member who manages and supports the tutoring cohort at the school.

    Responsibilities

    Tutors are expected to:

    • Work with K–2 students using ALP’s curriculum and instructional tools
    • Create a warm, encouraging, and compassionate learning environment
    • Keep students engaged, motivated, and appropriately supported (including breaks as needed)
    • Demonstrate patience and understanding, recognizing that reading progress is not linear and that students may struggle with certain concepts
    • Follow all ALP curriculum guidelines, policies, and procedures
    • Communicate any student challenges, concerns, or questions promptly with the Student Success Coordinator
    • Arrive on time and remain for the full tutoring session
    • Complete brief tutor reflection forms at the end of each session

    Qualifications

    • Commitment to serving young children and supporting literacy development
    • Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
    • Ability to follow a structured curriculum while responding to individual student needs
    • Warmth, patience, and compassion for students who are behind in reading
    • Willingness to collaborate with ALP staff and fellow tutors

    Teaching experience is not required—ALP provides all necessary training and materials.

    Background Check & Compliance

    • All tutors must successfully complete a background check through ALP and the local school district
    • Tutors are volunteers (not employees) but are expected to adhere to all ALP rules, guidelines, and policies
