    Description

    Media Storyteller & PR Ambassador

    Internship/Volunteer Opportunity | Student LunchBox

Student LunchBox is seeking a Media Storyteller & PR Ambassador to help transform our work from a powerful local initiative into a widely recognized movement across Southern California.

Our goal is to build a professional Media Outreach Toolkit and execute a focused press sprint to secure meaningful coverage in local newspapers, radio stations, digital outlets, and higher-education publications.

We are seeking a driven college student currently pursuing a degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field who is ready to step into a leadership role. This opportunity is ideal for someone who wants hands-on experience translating a mission rooted in college basic needs into compelling, editor-ready narratives that capture attention and inspire action.

    About Student LunchBox

Student LunchBox advances food security and basic needs support for college students across Los Angeles County. Each month, we serve thousands of students with nutritious food, fresh produce, protein, prepared meals, and essential items through our mobile markets and campus partnerships, bringing critical resources directly to students and strengthening their ability to remain enrolled and focused on academic success.

We have a proven model. We have a measurable impact. What we need now is greater visibility.

There is a visibility gap between our impact and the donors, sponsors, and community leaders who could help scale it further. This project is designed to close that gap.

    Project Structure

Before developing media, materials, or launching outreach, you will work closely with the Student LunchBox leadership team to deeply understand our mission, programs, data, and student impact. This is an immersive experience. You will learn how we operate, review real impact metrics, engage with our story assets, and gain insight into the challenges college students face across Los Angeles County.

Our goal is not simply for you to write about Student LunchBox. We want you to become a confident voice of the mission. By the time media outreach begins, you will understand our work well enough to speak about it with clarity, conviction, and strategic insight.

    Phase One: The Media Toolkit

You will help us build a professional foundation for media engagement, including:

      • A high-impact Media Kit
      • Press release template
      • Organizational fact sheet
      • Founder bio
      • Boilerplate language
      • Three distinct story angles tailored to different formats
      • Rising cost of student living and tuition
      • Volunteer and student leadership impact
      • Student-centered narratives focused on dignity and equity
      • Format differentiation for radio, print, and digital

    Phase Two: The Outreach Sprint

This phase positions you as the PR Lead and public voice of Student LunchBox. You will not simply send emails. You will represent our mission, shape our public presence, and build meaningful relationships within the media landscape.

Your leadership in this phase is critical to expanding our visibility and influence.

Your Role as PR Lead Includes:

      • Serving as the strategic voice of the organization in all written media outreach
      • Building valuable relationships with editors, producers, and journalists across Los Angeles and the higher education space
      • Identifying and vetting 10 to 15 high-value media contacts aligned with our mission
      • Crafting personalized, compelling pitches tailored to each outlet
      • Leading active outreach and managing follow-up communication
      • Refining story angles based on media feedback and engagement

The connections you cultivate and the credibility you establish will directly influence how widely our mission is understood and how strongly it resonates with the public. Your leadership in this phase will help shape Student LunchBox's long-term media footprint.

    The Impact of Your Work

This is not just a writing project. It is a strategic lever for growth.

    Destigmatizing College Hunger

Your storytelling will help shift the narrative away from outdated stereotypes and toward a serious conversation about basic needs and educational equity.

    Unlocking Critical Resources

Each media feature acts as a credibility signal. A single well-placed story can attract corporate sponsors, foundation funding, and community donors. That funding directly translates into more meals and expanded service to students from 17 campuses.

    Creating Sustainable Growth

Media visibility builds long-term trust. Trust builds partnerships. Partnerships increase scale. Your work will create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the initial placements.

    What We Are Looking For

      • Degree or pending degree in Journalism, English, or Communications
      • Strong narrative writing skills
      • Strong Public Speaking
      • Confidence pitching to editors, producers, and journalists
      • Comfort using LinkedIn, social platforms, or research tools to identify media gatekeepers
      • Strategic mindset and persistence

We are seeking a leader who is organized, creative, and motivated by measurable impact.

      • This role includes serving as a spokesperson for Student LunchBox alongside executive leadership
      • Depending on the opportunity, either you or a designated leader will act as the official voice in interviews and media features
      • Our leadership team will prioritize and make time for media opportunities secured through your outreach
      • We will ensure alignment and preparation, so every placement reflects the strength and impact of our mission

    ______________________________________________________________________________________

      • Personalized email address
      • Canva Pro access
      • Social media account access
      • Dedicated press email address
      • Basic tracking system for outreach and follow-up

    Why This Matters

Thousands of bright and ambitious college students in Los Angeles skip meals to afford rent or tuition. When students have reliable access to nutritious food, academic performance improves and retention increases.

    You provide the voice.

    We provide the meals.

Together, we can ensure students remain focused on their degrees rather than their next meal.
