    Description

nenos is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building a more ethical digital world through social connection and digital literacy. We’re creating a nonprofit, ad-free social media platform designed for people, not profit, and Digital Roots, a digital literacy education program focused on cybersecurity, media awareness, and tech-for-good learning.

We are a mission-driven startup powered entirely by volunteers, and we’re seeking a Pro Bono Legal Advisor to support our ethical, compliant, and responsible growth.

    About the Role

The Pro Bono Legal Advisor is a volunteer, project-based, non-representational role providing legal guidance to nenos leadership. You will advise on nonprofit compliance, contracts, intellectual property, privacy policies, and other tech-related matters as they arise.

This is not a General Counsel role, not a board seat, and does not involve formal representation, litigation, or ongoing legal duty. This is ideal for attorneys looking to meet pro bono hour requirements, support tech-for-good initiatives, or lend their expertise to a community-centered nonprofit.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide project-based legal guidance on nonprofit, technology, or IP-related issues
    • Review and advise on organizational documents (contracts, agreements, policies, licenses)
    • Support best practices around privacy, data protection, and online safety
    • Help refine Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and volunteer/contractor agreements
    • Advise on trademark and brand protection issues
    • Support leadership with ethical and compliant decision-making
    • Identify legal risks and suggest mitigation strategies

    This role does NOT include:

    • Representing nenos in any matter
    • Serving as General Counsel
    • Drafting complex litigation materials
    • Binding the organization to legal decisions
    • Any activities that require malpractice coverage on your end

    Qualifications

    • Licensed attorney (any U.S. state) or legal professional with relevant expertise
    • Experience in one or more: nonprofit law, contracts, IP/trademark, tech/privacy, or compliance
    • Ability to provide clear written and verbal explanations
    • Organized, communicative, and comfortable with remote collaboration
    • Passion for ethical technology, digital rights, privacy, or public-interest work
    • Ability to contribute on an as-needed, project-based schedule
    • Familiarity with 501(c)(3) requirements is a plus but not required

    Why Volunteer With nenos?

    • Contribute your expertise to a nonprofit building ethical technology
    • Help shape safe, responsible digital infrastructure
    • Gain pro bono hours in meaningful work with lasting community impact
    • Work directly with a thoughtful, motivated, and mission-driven leadership team
    • Make a real difference in how technology is built and governed
