Description
About The Empowerment Effect
Founded in 2022, The Empowerment Effect is a women-led nonprofit dedicated to advancing sports equity and empowering girls ages 7–17 in the Los Angeles area. Our signature Developmental Hockey Program is completely free for all participants, providing full gear, on-ice training, off-ice personal development workshops, and community events to help young girls build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills.
Role Overview
Love working with youth in sports and group settings? We are looking for Assistant Coaches to support our Lead Coaches across all program activities. Previous coaching experience not required, we will train you. As long as you can skate comfortably, have basic hockey knowledge, and enthusiasm for supporting young athletes both on the rink and in personal development sessions.
Time Commitment & Schedule (Oct – May)
Average Commitment: ~2 weekend sessions per month (approx. 4–6 hours/month total)
We rotate locations across Southern California to keep the program accessible:
- On-Ice Practices & Scrimmages: 2x/month | Sunday afternoons @ East West Ice Palace (Artesia)
- Dryland & Workshops: 1x/month | Saturday mornings @ Sports Basement (Long Beach)
- Shooting Lanes: 3–4x per season | Saturday afternoons @ Toyota Sports Performance Center (El Segundo)
- Community Events: 1x/month | Flexible weekend timing (LA Kings games, museum trips, etc.)
What You’ll Do
- Assist the Lead Coaches with drill setup, skill demonstrations, and practice flow on the ice
- Assist during monthly off-ice workshops and events. No teaching required. Just help guide group activities and keep energy high.
- Offer 1-on-1 encouragement and skill coaching to individual players across all activities
- Help manage team logistics and player safety during events
How We Support You
We want this to be a great growth experience for you! You will receive:
- Weekly emails with practice plans so you always know what to expect before stepping on the ice
- Monthly virtual volunteer check-ins to connect with the coaching team and share feedback
- Leadership development opportunities and coaching skills training throughout the season
- Signed verification for community service/volunteer hours upon request
Qualifications & Requirements

- Someone dedicated to serving as a strong, positive role model for young women and girls
- Able to commit to 2-3 weekend events per month from October through May
