    Commitment Details:
    Serve on-call for week day, weekend and evening shifts. One shift per month (~4-to-8 hours) required. On-call needs vary based on scale of emergency/disaster, and your location. (Average emergency/disaster call = 1-2 hours of work).

    Description

    Red Cross Media Relations volunteers serve as spokespeople, storytellers and facilitators for T.V., radio, online, print & social media.

    • Serve on-call in shifts to share information with Red Cross leadership on small-to-large incidents.
    • Represent Red Cross as media spokesperson for local news outlets in person and/or over the phone.
    • Work with Red Cross leaders and communications to write and pitch stories /information to local media.
    • Showcase Red Cross services, events and programs at events, training, interviews, etc.
    • Write and distribute media advisories and news releases.
    • Deploy to disaster scenes to perform on-site media relations if needed, including on-camera interviews.
    • Gather client stories, at times working with other communications staff, photographers, etc.
    • Connect people on national deployments with the media for interview opportunities
    • Working with communications staff, protect the local reputation of the Red Cross by quickly identifying and addressing potential negative stories/questions.
    • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled Public Affairs meetings (in person or via phone calls)

    Qualifications:

    • Education or professional background in Journalism, Media Relations, Public relations, Communications or similar experience.
    • Preferred background in Red Cross disaster response.
    • Fluency with Spanish strongly preferred.
