About A Better Chance of Andover

A Better Chance (ABC) of Andover is a residential educational opportunity program that provides academically talented young women of color from underserved communities with access to outstanding educational opportunities at local independent schools. Scholars live together in a supportive residential community while attending some of the region's top independent schools.

Our mission is to help scholars thrive academically, socially, and personally while preparing them for success in college, careers, and leadership.

    Position Summary

Community Connectors are caring adult volunteers who help expand scholars' experiences beyond the classroom and the ABC House. Through shared activities, outings, and meaningful conversations, Community Connectors help scholars build connections to the local community, explore new interests, and develop supportive relationships with trusted adults.

Whether it's a trip to a museum, lunch in town, a sporting event, a college visit, shopping, hiking, attending a community event, or simply spending time together, Community Connectors play an important role in helping scholars feel connected, supported, and engaged.

    Responsibilities

    • Spend time with one or more ABC scholars on occasional evenings or weekends.
    • Introduce scholars to new experiences, activities, and opportunities within the community.
    • Serve as a positive adult role model and mentor.
    • Encourage scholars' personal growth, confidence, and independence.
    • Help scholars build connections and a sense of belonging within the broader Andover community.
    • Communicate with ABC staff regarding planned outings and schedules.
    • Adhere to all ABC volunteer policies and youth safety guidelines.

    Ideal Volunteer Qualifications

    • Enjoy working with and supporting young people.
    • Friendly, dependable, and committed to creating positive experiences for scholars.
    • Open-minded and culturally responsive.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to serve as a positive role model.
    • Access to reliable transportation is helpful but not required.

    Time Commitment

Flexible. Most Community Connectors participate in activities once or twice per month, depending on their availability and the interests of the scholars.

    Why Volunteer?

The impact of a caring adult can last a lifetime. Community Connectors help scholars broaden their horizons, develop confidence, and experience opportunities they may not otherwise encounter. Volunteers often find the experience equally rewarding as they build meaningful relationships with remarkable young women who are pursuing ambitious educational goals.

    Training and Screening

All volunteers must complete the ABC volunteer application process, background screening requirements, and any required orientation or training before participating in activities with scholars.
