    Description

    Nonprofit Board Member (Legal Expertise)

    Overview

    • For more than 40 years, the Greater Attleboro Area Council for Children has been promoting the well-being of children and families in need in the Greater Attleboro Area by providing access to essential resources, responsive support services, and programs that brighten lives and build hope

from holiday gifts through Christmas is for Kids, to creative opportunities through Nicky O, to Daycare Assistance that helps parents stay afloat and a Backpack program which provides back to school and summer backpacks.

In 2024, GAACC hired its first Executive Director, allowing the board to begin transitioning from a hands on operational board to a governance board structure. This strategic change alleviates the administrative burden on the Board, allowing members to focus on long-term strategy and the expansion of the Board itself.

We’re looking to grow our Board with people who bring important skills and perspectives, especially in areas that help us strengthen and expand these programs.

The Board provides leadership, guidance, and oversight to keep the organization healthy and mission‑focused. We’re now hoping to add someone with a legal background who can offer practical insight and help us make smart, responsible decisions as we continue to grow.

    Role Purpose

This role helps the organization stay on solid legal and governance footing. You won’t be acting as our attorney of record — instead, you’ll offer high‑level guidance, help us spot risks early, and make sure we’re operating responsibly and confidently.

    Key Responsibilities

    Board Governance

    • Take part in board meetings, planning sessions, and committee work.
    • Help ensure we’re following our bylaws, staying true to our mission, and meeting our fiduciary responsibilities.
    • Support the creation and review of governance policies.

    Legal & Compliance Guidance

Offer insight on topics such as:

    • Nonprofit compliance and required filings
    • Contracts, MOUs, and partnership agreements
    • Risk management and liability issues
    • Employment and volunteer policies
    • Privacy, data protection, and intellectual property

You’ll help the board understand potential risks, make informed decisions, and know when it’s time to bring in outside legal counsel.

    Strategic Leadership

    • Contribute to long‑term planning and organizational strategy.
    • Share perspective on legal or regulatory trends that could affect our work.
    • Encourage transparency, ethical decision‑making, and good governance.

    Advocacy & Ambassadorship

    • Represent the Council in the community.
    • Help build relationships with partners, funders, and supporters.
    • Support fundraising efforts through outreach and introductions.

    Qualifications

    • JD or equivalent legal training.
    • Experience in nonprofit, corporate, employment, or administrative law — any mix is helpful.
    • Board or committee experience is a plus but not required.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
    • A genuine commitment to our mission and values.
    • Must live or work within our service area (Attleboro, North Attleboro, Norton, Mansfield, Seekonk, Rehoboth, Plainville and Dighton)

    Time Commitment

    • Attend monthly board meetings in person or electronically
    • Participate in at least one committee.
    • Join occasional planning sessions and community events.

    🌱 Impact of the Role

Your legal insight helps protect the organization, strengthen our governance, and ensure we can grow responsibly — all so we can continue supporting children and families in meaningful, lasting ways.
