Do you want to use your skills to help survivors of abuse and exploitation? We need you!

The Penetration Tester is responsible for evaluating and strengthening the cybersecurity of Operation Safe Escape, its partner organizations (including shelters and safe houses), and individual survivors concerned about their digital security. By simulating real-world cyber threats, this role helps identify vulnerabilities and improve security defenses to better protect survivors from potential attackers.

This role requires expertise in penetration testing, ethical hacking, vulnerability assessment, and secure system configurations. Additionally, the Penetration Tester must be well-versed in industry best practices, documentation standards, and ethical considerations to ensure responsible testing and reporting. Volunteers in this role must have strong technical skills, a commitment to ethical security practices, and a deep understanding of the importance of protecting vulnerable populations.

    WHAT THE ROLE LOOKS LIKE

Performs penetration tests on Operation Safe Escape’s internal systems, ensuring the organization’s security infrastructure is robust.

Conducts security assessments for shelters, safe houses, and partner organizations to detect and mitigate risks.

Assists individual survivors by evaluating their personal cybersecurity posture, including account security, device vulnerabilities, and network risks.

Documents and reports findings in a responsible manner, providing clear recommendations for remediation.

    WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Experience in penetration testing, ethical hacking, cybersecurity, or a related field.

Familiarity with penetration testing tools such as Kali Linux, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Nmap, Wireshark, or equivalent.

Understanding of vulnerability assessment methodologies, including OWASP Top Ten, MITRE ATT&CK, and NIST frameworks.

Ability to document findings clearly and provide actionable remediation steps.

Strong ethical standards and an understanding of security testing laws and compliance requirements.

Familiarity with cybersecurity challenges faced by survivors of abuse, stalking, and trafficking is a plus.

    DATA PROTECTION AND CLIENT PROTECTION

Volunteers handle confidential data and must protect survivor information at all times.

Sensitive vulnerability data must be handled with the strictest confidence and protected in accordance with Operation Safe Escape procedures.

Each volunteer must pass a double background check due to the sensitive nature of the work.

Operation Safe Escape is a non-discriminatory organization that protects survivors regardless of gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, immigration status, or any other characteristic.
