About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit organization serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.
We believe storytelling can do more than capture attention.
It can help people understand an issue, discover an opportunity, meet someone doing meaningful work, learn something new, challenge assumptions, and feel connected to a larger community.
The Opportunity
Can you turn a camera on and make someone want to keep watching?
Can you take an important subject and make it feel human, accessible, interesting, and worth talking about?
MAP is looking for a creative and engaging Social Impact Vlogger & Digital Storyteller to help bring our mission, ideas, people, programs, and community to life through video.
This is not about creating traditional nonprofit promotional videos.
We want to experiment with a more personal, authentic, conversational style of storytelling.
Think:
Come with us.
Let's explore this.
Here's something you may not know.
Meet someone doing incredible work.
Let's talk about an issue affecting young people.
Here's what happened behind the scenes.
We tried something new—here's what we learned.
The goal is to make social impact feel less like an institutional announcement and more like a conversation people actually want to join.
Create Vlogs for a Cause
Develop engaging vlog-style content connected to MAP's mission and work.
Potential stories may explore:
- Mentorship
- Education
- Literacy
- Youth opportunity
- Housing instability
- Career readiness
- Creativity
- Community partnerships
- Volunteerism
- Accessibility
- Advocacy
- Technology
- Books and storytelling
- Art and music
- Film and animation
- Behind-the-scenes nonprofit work
- Community events
- Social-impact ideas
- People using their skills for good
Some videos may tell stories.
Others may explain.
Some may ask questions.
Some may take viewers behind the scenes.
Others may simply start an interesting conversation.
Be a Digital Storyteller
Help translate MAP's work into stories designed for digital audiences.
Develop concepts with a strong:
Hook → Story → Human Connection → Insight → Invitation
Help viewers understand not only what MAP does, but why it matters.
The goal is not to sound like an organization reading a press release.
The goal is to sound human.
Develop Your Creative Voice
We are not looking for someone to imitate another creator.
Bring personality.
Bring curiosity.
Bring ideas.
Bring your own storytelling instincts.
Experiment with different approaches while remaining aligned with MAP's mission, safeguarding standards, communications strategy, and organizational voice.
Professional does not have to mean predictable.
Mission-driven does not have to mean boring.
Create Platform-Ready Video Content
Collaborate with MAP's social media and communications teams to develop content appropriate for platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other digital channels.
Help think beyond simply resizing the same video for every platform.
Consider:
Who is watching?
Why are they here?
What will make them stop?
What will keep them watching?
What should they understand afterward?
What might encourage them to participate?
Interview Interesting People
Help bring MAP's community and network into the story.
Depending on the project, you may interview:
- Volunteers
- Educators
- Artists
- Writers
- Community partners
- Advocates
- Researchers
- Creatives
- Nonprofit professionals
- Subject-matter experts
- Organizational leaders
Help conversations feel natural, thoughtful, curious, and accessible.
Take Audiences Behind the Scenes
Show people how mission-driven work actually happens.
Explore the process behind programs, books, workshops, podcasts, animation, community partnerships, advocacy initiatives, creative projects, and other MAP work.
Sometimes the journey is as interesting as the finished product.
Collaborate With Creative Teams
You will not have to create everything alone.
Work alongside MAP's:
- Video editors
- Social media team
- Writers
- Marketers
- Graphic designers
- Animators
- Illustrators
- Podcast teams
- Communications professionals
- Program teams
- Creative leaders
A vlog may begin with your camera but eventually become part of a larger storytelling ecosystem.
Develop Recurring Video Concepts
Help create recognizable series that audiences can return to.
Possibilities might include:
Day in the Mission
Behind the Promise
People Making a Difference
What We Learned
Five Minutes With...
Inside MAP
Let's Talk About It
How It Works
Stories From the Community
The goal is to develop content people recognize, anticipate, and want to revisit.
Community-Centered Storytelling
Help MAP tell stories with people rather than simply about them.
Approach storytelling with curiosity, respect, context, and dignity.
Especially when discussing housing instability or other sensitive experiences, avoid sensationalism and narratives that reduce people to circumstances.
A compelling story should never require sacrificing someone's dignity.
Youth Safety, Privacy & Consent
Because MAP serves children and youth, safeguarding comes before content.
Follow all MAP requirements involving:
- Youth privacy
- Consent and permissions
- Photography and video
- Personal information
- Approved communications
- Interviews
- Digital safety
- Appropriate boundaries
- Content review
Not every moment needs to become content.
Knowing when not to film is part of responsible storytelling.
The Ideal Candidate
You may already be a vlogger, creator, journalist, filmmaker, presenter, interviewer, YouTuber, social media creator, video storyteller, or aspiring digital-media professional.
You might also be someone who has always thought:
“I could make something really interesting if someone gave me a meaningful subject to explore.”
You are likely someone who:
- Feels comfortable communicating on camera
- Has natural curiosity
- Can make complicated subjects approachable
- Understands digital audiences
- Has strong storytelling instincts
- Generates creative ideas
- Can interview people naturally
- Understands hooks and audience attention
- Is comfortable experimenting
- Can accept creative feedback
- Works collaboratively
- Communicates reliably
- Understands that authenticity does not mean abandoning professionalism
- Wants to use creativity for something meaningful
You do not need a massive following.
You do not need to be an influencer.
You need something more important:
A voice, curiosity, creativity, and something worth saying.
Preferred Experience
Experience or demonstrated interest in one or more of the following is valuable:
- Vlogging
- YouTube
- Digital video
- Content creation
- On-camera presenting
- Social media
- Journalism
- Interviewing
- Filmmaking
- Video production
- Storytelling
- Nonprofit communications
- Social-impact media
A portfolio, channel, reel, sample video, or examples of previous creative work are strongly encouraged when available.
What Success Looks Like
MAP develops a recognizable vlog and digital-storytelling presence.
Complex issues become understandable.
Behind-the-scenes work becomes visible.
Interesting people get opportunities to share what they know.
Viewers begin returning for recurring content.
Social channels have more original video storytelling.
MAP's creative teams have new material to build upon.
Content generates conversation rather than simply impressions.
Stories remain respectful and mission-aligned.
And people who might never read a nonprofit report or organizational announcement discover MAP because they watched a video that made them curious.
What You'll Gain
This is an opportunity to build a body of meaningful digital storytelling while collaborating with a multidisciplinary creative organization.
You can gain experience across:
- On-camera storytelling
- Vlogging
- Interviewing
- Digital journalism
- Social-impact communications
- Video development
- Audience engagement
- Creative collaboration
- Nonprofit storytelling
- Multi-platform content
You will have opportunities to develop original ideas rather than simply execute someone else's content calendar.
For an emerging creator, this can become meaningful portfolio work.
For an experienced creator, it is an opportunity to use your voice and skills for social impact.
Why This Role Matters
There are already millions of videos competing for people's attention.
We do not need to add more noise.
We want to create something worth someone's time.
Something that teaches.
Something that introduces.
Something that asks a good question.
Something that makes an issue easier to understand.
Something that lets people see the human beings behind a mission.
Something that makes someone think:
I didn't know that.
I want to learn more.
I could help.
I want to be part of this.
That is vlogging for a cause.
Volunteer Commitment
This is an unpaid, fully remote volunteer position requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week with a minimum six-month commitment.
Consistent participation, creativity, collaboration, communication, and reliable follow-through are essential.
Volunteers should provide at least two weeks' notice when ending their service whenever possible.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should apply directly through Idealist and submit:
- A current résumé
- A cover letter describing their interest in digital storytelling and Mentor A Promise
- A portfolio, video reel, YouTube channel, social media account, or other examples of relevant creative work when available
Applicants are encouraged to tell us what kind of vlog or recurring video series they would be excited to create for a social-impact organization.
At this time, MAP volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data-privacy, and programmatic requirements.
Pick up the camera. Ask the interesting question. Take people behind the scenes. Introduce them to ideas and people they might never otherwise encounter. Tell stories with dignity, curiosity, and creativity—and use your voice to help move a mission forward.
