    Description

Help Build a Website That Advances Prevention Science

The National Prevention Science Coalition to Improve Lives (NPSC) is a national nonprofit dedicated to preventing social problems and promoting wellbeing by translating scientific knowledge into effective, sustainable practices, systems, and policies. We work with researchers, policymakers, educators, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to move evidence into action. We're redesigning our website to better communicate that mission and engage researchers, policymakers, educators, donors, and the public.

We're seeking a creative, detail-oriented volunteer—ideally a student, recent graduate, or emerging professional—to help complete, enhance, and help shape our newly redesigned website. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, strengthen your portfolio, and contribute to work that supports healthier children, families, and communities.

    About the Project

NPSC recently partnered with a professional web designer to develop a new visual identity, comprehensive brand standards, and several redesigned website pages. The foundation has already been established.

We're looking for someone who enjoys bringing ideas to life—someone who appreciates the value of design consistency while also recognizing opportunities to improve user experience, storytelling, and visual engagement. While maintaining consistency with our brand standards is an important part of the role, we also welcome your creativity and fresh perspective. If you see opportunities to enhance page layouts, improve user experience, or introduce thoughtful design elements that complement the existing vision, we'd love to collaborate with you.

This is a chance to build upon a professional framework while leaving your own creative mark on a nationally recognized nonprofit's website.

    Responsibilities

    • Build and complete the remaining website pages using our existing brand standards and templates.
    • Maintain consistency in layout, typography, colors, imagery, and overall user experience.
    • Recommend creative enhancements that strengthen the site's visual appeal, usability, and visitor engagement while remaining true to the established brand.
    • Organize and present content in an engaging, accessible, and visually appealing way.
    • Create graphics or page layouts that align with—and thoughtfully expand upon—the existing design language when appropriate.
    • Optimize pages for desktop and mobile viewing.
    • Collaborate with NPSC to refine page structure, navigation, and user experience.
    • Incorporate feedback and iterate on designs throughout the project.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Current undergraduate or graduate student, recent graduate, or early-career professional interested in web design, graphic design, digital media, communications, or a related field.
    • Applicants should already be comfortable designing and editing websites in Wix. Our website is built entirely on the Wix platform, and because this is a volunteer role with a defined timeline, we are seeking someone who can begin contributing immediately without platform training.
    • Familiarity with responsive web design and user experience best practices.
    • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design tools.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
    • An interest in nonprofit organizations, public health, education, or social impact is a plus.

    What You'll Gain

    • A significant portfolio project for a national nonprofit organization.
    • Experience working from professional brand standards while exercising your own design judgment and creativity.
    • The opportunity to help shape the visual experience of an organization whose work reaches researchers, policymakers, educators, and public health leaders nationwide.
    • Your work will become part of the public-facing website of a national nonprofit and will be viewed by researchers, policymakers, educators, donors, partners, and communities across the country.
    • Direct collaboration with NPSC's Director of Strategic Development throughout the project, providing valuable experience working alongside nonprofit leadership.
    • Flexible, fully remote volunteer work with the ability to set your own schedule.
    • A professional reference and LinkedIn recommendation upon successful completion of the project.

    Time Commitment

Start Date: As soon as possible.

There are no set weekly hours for this volunteer opportunity. Work when it's convenient for you, provided the website is completed by September 1, 2026.

    Collaboration

You will work directly with NPSC's Director of Strategic Development, who will serve as your primary point of contact throughout the project. You'll receive guidance on project priorities and feedback as pages are completed while also having the opportunity to work independently and contribute your own creative ideas within our established brand standards.

What You Won't Be Expected to Do

    • Create a new brand identity.
    • Write website copy from scratch.
    • Perform custom coding.
    • Maintain the website after the project concludes.

    How to Apply

    Please submit:

    • A resume
    • A brief statement describing your interest in the opportunity
    • A portfolio or examples of websites or digital design work (course projects are welcome)
    • Your anticipated availability

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and encourage students and emerging professionals who are eager to learn, contribute, and make a difference to apply.

Whether you're looking to build your portfolio, gain nonprofit experience, or apply your design skills to meaningful work, we'd love to hear from you.
