    Description

    Position Overview

Maison des Talibés is seeking motivated volunteers to support basic first aid and health awareness activities for street-connected talibé children attending the center in Darou, Saint-Louis.

The volunteer will contribute to the delivery of non-clinical first aid support and health awareness sessions aimed at improving children’s well-being, safety, and understanding of basic hygiene and health practices, in close collaboration with local staff.

    Main Responsibilities

      • Provide basic first aid support for minor injuries and everyday health issues, within a non-medical framework
      • Facilitate health awareness and hygiene activities (personal hygiene, wound care basics, hydration, prevention of common illnesses)
      • Use age-appropriate and participatory methods to engage children aged 5 to 18
      • Ensure a safe, calm, and respectful environment during all activities
      • Collaborate with local staff for referrals when medical attention is required
      • Contribute to the development of simple, sustainable health awareness tools and practices at the center

    Profile Sought

We are looking for volunteers who:

      • Have training or experience in first aid, basic healthcare, nursing, public health, or related fields
      • Are calm, attentive, and comfortable working with children
      • Understand the limits of a non-clinical, community-based role
      • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, humility, and respect for local practices

Formal medical certification is not required, but first aid training or relevant experience is a strong asset.

    Time Commitment

      • Minimum commitment: 1 week
      • Approximate involvement: 15 hours per week or more
      • Schedule to be defined collaboratively with the team

    Languages

      • French or English required
      • Wolof or Pulaar is an asset but not mandatory

    Ethical Framework

Volunteers are expected to work within Maison des Talibés’ ethical approach:

      • Providing support without replacing medical professionals
      • Respecting children’s dignity, consent, and rhythms
      • Working in coordination with local actors and existing health pathways

    What the Volunteer Gains

      • Practical experience in community-based first aid and health promotion
      • Meaningful engagement in a child-centered social initiative
      • Cross-cultural learning in a Senegalese context
      • Collaboration with local staff and international volunteers
