    Description

The Collateral Legal Assistance for Survivors (CLAS) Program at the Women’s Law Center is seeking a dedicated and compassionate law student to join our team as an intern. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in providing trauma-informed legal support to survivors of domestic violence in complex, high-conflict family law matters.

About Us: The Women’s Law Center is a non-profit organization providing holistic legal services to survivors of domestic violence. The mission of WLC is to ensure the physical safety, economic security, and bodily autonomy of women throughout Maryland. This mission is achieved through direct legal services, educational hotlines, and advocacy. The CLAS program focuses on representing survivors in high-conflict divorce, custody, and child support cases, often involving complicated procedural or factual issues such as ongoing safety concerns, immigration barriers, or financial abuse.

Key Responsibilities: Our team strives to make the internship experience a meaningful one, tailored to the individual intern’s interests. Past interns have:

    • Assisted attorneys with discovery, basic pleadings, and trial preparation.
    • Reviewed, summarized, and organized evidence, including documents, photos, and communications relevant to pending cases.
    • Observed court proceedings in District and Circuit Courts.
    • Conducted trauma-informed client intakes and helped screen for legal issues and eligibility.
    • Researched family law and procedural issues relevant to case strategy.
    • Helped prepare client-centered materials and improve internal resources.

    Internship Details:

    • Hours: Approximately 12-16 hours per week.
    • Location: This is primarily a remote position, with occasional in-person attendance at court proceedings in Baltimore County, Carroll County, and Baltimore City based on the interest and availability of the intern.
    • Duration: Flexible, with a preference for candidates who can commit to at least one semester.
    • Compensation: While this is an unpaid position, we are happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

How to Apply: Interested applicants should email a resume, cover letter, and availability to Sara Powel (she/her), Family Law Director, at spowel@wlcmd.org. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
