Description
The Volunteer GED Teacher plays a vital role in helping adult learners prepare to earn their GED credential. Volunteers provide instruction, encouragement, and academic support in one or more GED subject areas while fostering a positive and respectful learning environment. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about education and committed to helping adults achieve their educational and career goals.
Responsibilities
- Plan and teach engaging GED preparation lessons in Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and/or Social Studies.
- Assess students' academic strengths and areas for improvement.
- Provide individualized tutoring and small-group instruction.
- Help students develop effective study habits and test-taking strategies.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Encourage student participation, confidence, and perseverance.
- Maintain attendance and basic instructional records as requested.
- Collaborate with TRTC staff to support student success.
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; bachelor's degree or teaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of GED subject matter and adult learning principles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, compassion, and the ability to motivate adult learners.
- Comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience in education, tutoring, mentoring, or workforce development is preferred but not required.
Time Commitment
- Minimum of 4-8 hours per week
- Volunteer commitment of at least three months preferred.
- Flexible weekday and evening opportunities may be available.
