    Description

Heartland Hospice offers volunteer opportunities for caring individuals who wish to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. Here are some ways you can serve as a visitor volunteer:

    1. Companionship: Spending time with patients by offering a smile, holding their hand, sharing stories, listening, reading, or singing.
    2. Care Giver Respite: Offering scheduled breaks for caregivers, allowing them to rest, manage personal tasks, or simply recharge.
    3. Veteran-to-Veteran Support: If you are a Veteran, you can support fellow service members during their end of life journey.

As a Companionship Visitor Volunteer, you will be given choices as to how much and what types of things you want to do Volunteers have flexibility, the opportunities may be once monthly to once weekly depending on your availability.

Our patients reside in private homes, local nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities Some examples of typical volunteer duties are:

    1. Listening to a patient's concerns
    2. Being a comforting and supportive presence
    3. Engaging in the patient's hobbies, i.e. playing a board game or discussing current events
    4. Reading or writing down memories for the patient or helping with correspondence
    5. Telling other hospice staff the needs of the patient
    6. Running errands or doing light housekeeping
    7. Providing time for the caregiver to take care of themself

Our volunteers are "hands off" and no medical training is required; all you need is a compassionate heart. Our complete volunteer training covers grief counseling, emotional support, and end of life care to ensure our volunteers feel comfortable with their tasks.
