    Description

    Protect local wildlife & habitats - join our Conservation Committee!

    The Conservation Committee plays a major role in fulfilling the Society’s mission. This committee shall keep the chapter abreast of ongoing and developing conservation issues at all levels of government and tribes in our service area.

    The Committee covers a lot of areas, and we need volunteers to help tackle smaller tasks.

    If you can help with one or more of the following items, we'd love to have your help!

    • Staying informed of conservation issues at the local, state, regional, national, and tribal levels (subscribe to pertinent email lists and report back to the committee (i.e., WADNR, WDFW, USFWS, USFS, WADOE, Snohomish County, and Island County [Camano Island], Stillaguamish and Tulalip Tribes)
    • Informing the Board of Directors of issues and advising the Board of recommended actions or next steps
    • Submitting information/reports to be included in the newsletter each month
    • Coordinating with staff to update website with relevant information
    • Coordinating with staff to send out Action Alerts to our email list and social media channels
    • Coordinating efforts with neighboring Audubon chapters who may have interest in issues we are working on
    • Drafting letters to the editor of local newspapers to promote bird and habitat conservation
    • Drafting letters of support/opposition to actions or issues
    • Developing relationships with management agency staff (i.e., Snohomish County Parks & Recreation; Snohomish County Conservation & Natural Resources; WDFW biologists and Wildlife Area managers; Forest Service and WADNR)

    We also have subcommittees with specific focus areas:

    Subcommittee: Forest Practices

    This subcommittee shall focus upon planning and other issues pertaining to the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and WA DNR-managed lands in Snohomish and Island (Camano) counties. As directed by the PAS Board, may also work on issues pertaining to Snohomish County Conservation & Natural Resources Department.

    Subcommittee: Bird-friendly Communities

    This committee shall promote Audubon’s bird-friendly communities initiatives, including:

    • Promoting Native Plants for Birds, Lights Out, and Bird-safe Buildings
    • Maintaining the Edmonds Wildlife Habitat and Native Plant Demonstration Garden
    • Looking for opportunities to implement actions in our communities, including at the individual level or with other organizations/agencies (i.e., installing and maintaining nest boxes, installing native plant gardens, installing bird-safe window coverings, setting up window collision monitoring, etc.)
    • Coordinating with staff and the Education & Outreach and Communications Committees to develop informational resources and disseminate them

    Qualifications:

    • Passion for the mission of Pilchuck Audubon and a dedicated interest in keeping common birds common and rare birds protected
    • Friendly, welcoming, and inclusive disposition
