    Description

Do you care about literacy, educational equity, and helping children experience the joy of reading? Access Books Bay Area is seeking 2–3 dedicated long-term volunteers in the East Bay to help us expand our work creating welcoming, well-stocked school libraries for students who need them most.

    About Us

Access Books Bay Area is a nonprofit organization that improves school libraries in schools serving students living in poverty. We work to increase students’ access to high-quality books, support pleasure reading, and help create library spaces that invite children to read, explore, and learn.

Our current operations team is based in Palo Alto, which limits how far we can realistically travel to support schools. We know there is significant need in the East Bay, and we are looking to build a small local team that can help us grow our work there in a meaningful and sustainable way.

    What Volunteers Do

East Bay operations volunteers may help with a range of project and logistics tasks, including:

    • Receiving and organizing donated books from local book drives
    • Helping identify or manage storage space for donated books
    • Organizing occasional volunteer events to sort and process books
    • Visiting schools that apply for library projects to assess their collections and needs
    • Supporting school library staff with weeding and organizing collections
    • Assisting with book deliveries and other project logistics
    • Helping recruit, coordinate, and track volunteers
    • Working with schools and our muralist to help determine mural locations and designs for project days

    Who This Role Is For

This role is a great fit for someone who is organized, reliable, and excited to make a tangible difference behind the scenes and on the ground. We are especially looking for volunteers who:

    • Live in the East Bay
    • Care deeply about literacy and equitable access to books
    • Are comfortable communicating with school staff, volunteers, and community partners
    • Can help with some responsibilities during the work week
    • Are interested in making a long-term commitment to building our East Bay presence

Experience with schools, libraries, book drives, volunteer coordination, or nonprofit operations is helpful, but not required.

    Why It Matters

By helping us build a stronger East Bay operations team, you will play a direct role in expanding access to high-quality books and joyful reading spaces for local students.
