    Manager of Privacy Policy (Volunteer)

    Privacy, Ethics & Digital Trust

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

Location: Remote with NYC-based collaboration as needed

    Type: Volunteer

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning (SEL), creative expression, education, housing innovation, and community-based programs. MAP works with sensitive information involving children, families, volunteers, donors, and partners. Strong privacy policy is essential to protecting dignity, trust, and safety.

At MAP, privacy is not just a technical issue—it is a human, ethical, and legal commitment.

About the Privacy, Ethics & Digital Trust Function

This function ensures MAP’s policies, practices, and communications uphold the highest standards of privacy, consent, and data protection. It works across technology, legal, programs, and operations to ensure privacy is embedded by design and clearly articulated in policy.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Manager of Privacy Policy to lead the development, review, and stewardship of MAP’s privacy-related policies and frameworks. This role focuses on translating legal and ethical privacy principles into clear, accessible, and enforceable organizational policy.

The Manager of Privacy Policy works closely with IT Security, Legal, Data & Research, Operations, and Executive Leadership to ensure privacy policies are aligned with practice, compliant with applicable laws, and understandable to staff, volunteers, and the communities MAP serves.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the development, review, and maintenance of MAP’s privacy policies and frameworks
    • Ensure privacy policies align with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices
    • Translate complex privacy requirements into clear, accessible policy language
    • Partner with IT Security & Privacy leadership to align policy with technical safeguards
    • Collaborate with Legal and Compliance teams on privacy governance and risk
    • Support consent, data minimization, and data retention policy development
    • Serve as a privacy policy resource for staff and volunteers
    • Review public-facing and internal documents for privacy alignment
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Experience in privacy policy, data protection, compliance, or related fields
    • Strong understanding of privacy principles, consent frameworks, and data governance
    • Ability to write clear, accessible policies for diverse audiences
    • Sound judgment when working with sensitive or regulated information
    • Comfort collaborating across technical, legal, and program teams
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience in nonprofit, education, healthcare, or youth-serving environments
    • Familiarity with privacy laws and frameworks (e.g., FERPA principles, GDPR concepts, data minimization)
    • Experience drafting or reviewing organizational policies
    • Background in ethics, compliance, or digital trust
    • Experience supporting distributed teams and digital collaboration

    Commitment

    • Volunteer leadership role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration

    What You’ll Gain

    • Leadership experience shaping privacy policy in a mission-driven organization
    • Direct impact on protecting children, families, and community trust
    • Collaboration with senior leadership and cross-functional teams
    • Professional references and letters of recommendation
    • The opportunity to build ethical, human-centered privacy frameworks

    How to Apply

Interested candidates must apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • Resume (required)
    • Cover letter (required) describing relevant experience in privacy policy, data protection, or compliance

Help ensure privacy is practiced with clarity, care, and accountability—so MAP’s work remains trustworthy and safe.
