James River Hospice - Farmville, VA is looking for a few really good Friendly Visitor volunteers to visit with our patients in and around the Farmville area. Our hospice provides services within a 50 mile radius of Farmville.
Hospice is a system of care not a place. As a James River Hospice Friendly Visitor volunteer you will visit with one of our patients in whatever setting they call home; the house they raised their family in, a 55+ community, an assisted living facility, a nursing home or a memory care unit in an assisted living facility or nursing home. At James River Hospice, we ask that you bring the sunshine to your patient during your visit. Our patients have a terminal illness and have been told by their doctor if their disease takes it normal and natural trajectory, they would have six months or less to live. Some James River Hospice, Farmville patients live longer than six months, while others live shorter than six months.
When you visit with your patient, you can play a card or board game, you can go for a walk outside (weather permitting) with your patient, you can watch a classic tv show or movie together or quietly hold your patient's hand to provide emotional support and comfort.
To volunteer with James River Hospice you must be at least 18 years old. You will receive a two-step TB test, drug screen, and a background check, all at no cost to you. you will also need to have or obtain a BLS/CPR certificate.
You will be trained so you will be confident in your role as a Friendly Visitor Volunteer even if you've never volunteered anywhere before.
