Team Naturespace – Autumn Forest Stewardship
Details
Description
Restore the Gregory Ridge trail before winter!
WHAT / WHY / WHO?
Autumn gives us one of the best windows of the year to care for the forest before winter settles in. We’ll spend the afternoon together at Clement Waters Retreat at Gregory Ridge picking up litter, clearing plants that have grown into the walking trails, and root docking invasive bush honeysuckle while it is still easy to spot its green leaves among the overwintering native vegetation.
This is a good volunteer day for those of us who like being outdoors, working with our hands, and being able to look back at a gathering spot and see what changed because we showed up. Together, we’ll help keep a neighborhood nature space walkable, support healthier forest growth, and prepare the trails for everyone who comes here to walk, reflect, volunteer, and spend restorative time outdoors.
WEAR / BRING / GET
Early November afternoons in Kansas City are often cool, with temperatures commonly somewhere in the 50s, but Missouri autumn weather can swing warmer, colder, windier, or wetter on a dime. You’ll want to dress in layers you can remove as the work warms us up. Long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes or boots with good tread are strongly recommended. A lightweight rain or wind layer is also a good thing to have nearby.
Bring work gloves if you have a favorite pair, a reusable water bottle, and anything else that helps you stay comfortable outdoors for three hours. We’ll have tools, extra gloves, filtered water, and guidance ready for the projects we tackle together.
PROJECT DETAILS
We’ll divide our attention among three kinds of visible autumn care.
First, we’ll collect litter that has made its way onto the property and trails. Then we’ll clear low growth, woody sprouts, and other vegetation beginning to grow into the walking paths.
Our larger stewardship project will be invasive bush honeysuckle. Late fall gives us an advantage: honeysuckle often holds onto its green leaves after many native woodland plants have gone dormant, making the bushes much easier for us to identify. Since this is an active foraging forest where people gather food regularly, we’ll learn a non-toxic, herbicide-free root docking approach together and work on removing appropriately sized plants where ground conditions allow.
No previous land-restoration experience is required for you to participate. We’ll demonstrate the work. There will be useful jobs for different levels of strength and stamina. Fallen leaves can hide roots, rocks, and uneven ground this time of year, so working in at least pairs and watching our footing will be part of how we look after one another while we work.
PERKS
There is something immensely satisfying about finishing an afternoon together with filled bags of litter that no longer dirties the forest, a trail that is now easier to walk, and airy spots with fewer invasive shrubs competing with native woodland growth.
These three hours will involve physical movement in an outdoor setting. Research on time spent in nature has found benefits related to stress regulation, mood, attention, and general wellbeing. None of us can know beforehand exactly how an afternoon in the forest will land for another person, but we relish every chance to notice what changes in the way we feel after working together under the trees around moving water and rustling leaves.
BACKGROUND
Clement Waters Retreat at Gregory Ridge is a four-acre edible urban forest restoration site in Kansas City. Years of dumping, invasive growth, and neglect once obscured the accessibility of a woodland creek in the Gregory Ridge Neighborhood.
Over the years, hundreds of us have become 'Team Naturespace' to change that story. We keep showing up to remove waste and invasive plants, and keep this small forest trail available as a place for neighborhood walking, nature-based wellness experiences, environmental learning, and simple time outdoors. The work is intentionally hands-on. We believe that shared land becomes healthier when we consistently care for it.
BOTTOM LINE
Every piece of litter that we bag, each honeysuckle root core that we extract, helps protect a neighborhood forest where visiting folks and residents can breathe easy as they walk, notice seasonal changes, and reconnect with the living world around them.
We’d love to have you making it happen alongside us.
