Overview
Hawthorne Youth and Community Center, located in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, MA, is a grassroots, non-profit organization that has been responsive to community needs for over fifty years. We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors and help shape the future of our organization. Board terms are three years and may be renewed indefinitely.
What We Need
We seek individuals who bring a range of expertise, backgrounds, community insight, and a shared passion for community and youth programming to join our Board of Directors. Ideal board members are committed, community-minded, and ready to roll up their sleeves. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a passionate neighbor with lived experience, your voice and efforts can help us build a stronger future for HYCC. We welcome all interested individuals to apply, and especially if you have one or more of the following skills or experience you are able to share:
- Legal – to advise on compliance, contracts, and risk management
- Human Resources – to help develop policies, ensure compliance and suggest best practices when it comes to hiring and supporting HYCC staff and youth employment.
- Technology – to guide systems and digital infrastructure
- Finance – to oversee budgeting, accounting practices and financial strategy
- Property Management – to help maintain and improve our physical space
- Landscaping/Gardening - to support and guide use of the Center’s outdoor space
- Youth Programming & Mentoring – to guide program strategy and support relationships with youth and/or to organize or provide youth programming and mentoring
- Marketing & Communications – to amplify our story through our website, social media and local media connections
- Fundraising & Development – to assist with grant writing and expand our donor base to sustain our work
- Nonprofit Governance – to ensure strong leadership and ethical operations
- Community Connections – especially individuals who are deeply rooted in or connected to the neighborhood. All community connections are valued, including long-time and new residents
Expectations:
Board members are expected to:
- Attend monthly board meetings and serve on at least one committee
- Contribute their skills and knowledge to help HYCC thrive
- Participate in fundraising and development efforts, including making a personally meaningful annual gift
- Represent the organization positively in the community and help expand our network
- Work collaboratively other board members on a variety of projects
