Description
At The Brisben Center, our kitchen is the heart of the shelter. While many incredible teams cook and serve dinner, and our residents handle the daily cleaning chores, we need a dedicated "behind-the-scenes" hero to manage the inventory. We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented volunteer to take on our pantry and walk-in fridge areas. By keeping our kitchen prepped and our food safely rotated, you directly reduce food waste, ensure compliance with health standards, and take a massive burden off our Kitchen Manager!
Key Responsibilities
- The Expiration Audit: Thoroughly sort through incoming food donations and existing stock to check expiration dates.
- Mastering FIFO (First-In, First-Out): Reorganize canned goods, dry pastas, and pantry staples so that older items are pulled to the front to be used first, while new donations are stocked in the back.
- Service Station Prep: Set our meal providers up for success! Ensure that the kitchen prep areas are fully stocked with fresh sanitizing supplies, clean rags, food-safe gloves, and hairnets before the meal groups arrive.
- Strategic Categorization: Group similar items together (e.g., creating dedicated zones for baking supplies, breakfast items, or specific canned vegetables) so shelter staff and cooks can find exactly what they need at a glance. This will be coordinated alongside the kitchen manager.
What We Are Looking For
- Detail-Oriented & Methodical: You are the kind of person who loves to categorize, label, and bring order to chaos. Checking dates and organizing cans sounds deeply satisfying to you.
- Independent & Self-Motivated: While you will have guidance from the Kitchen Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, this is largely a self-directed role. You are comfortable putting in headphones and getting to work!
- Physical Requirements: Ability to comfortably lift and move standard boxes of canned goods or bulk dry items.
- Hygiene-Conscious: A strong understanding of basic kitchen hygiene and a commitment to maintaining a sanitary environment.
