    Description

    Museum Volunteers Needed

Help Bring Plano’s History to Life!

The Interurban Railway Museum is looking for friendly, curious, and dependable volunteers who enjoy meeting people and sharing stories.

As a Volunteer Museum Docent, you’ll welcome visitors to the museum, help them explore our exhibits, and share the story of the Texas Electric Railway and its connection to Plano and the surrounding communities. Volunteers may greet walk-in visitors, assist with scheduled groups and field trips, give tours of historic Car 360, help with special events, and support the day-to-day visitor experience at the museum.

You do not need to be a train expert or a historian! We’ll help you learn the museum and its stories. What matters most is that you enjoy talking with people, are willing to learn, and want to help visitors of all ages have a welcoming and engaging experience.

This is a great opportunity for retirees, community members, history enthusiasts, train lovers, and students interested in history, education, museums, public history, or working with the public.

    What Our Volunteers Do

    • Welcome and engage museum visitors
    • Share the history of Plano and the Texas Electric Railway
    • Lead or assist with tours of the museum and historic Car 360
    • Help with school groups, field trips, and special programs
    • Maintain accurate visitor records
    • Help create a friendly, welcoming environment for visitors of all ages
    • Assist museum staff with occasional projects and special events

    Volunteer Requirements

    • Must be 18 years of age or older
    • Complete the required background check and volunteer onboarding/training
    • Be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
    • Be dependable and comfortable interacting with the public
    • Be willing to learn about the museum, Car 360, and local railway history
    • Commit to volunteering on an ongoing basis, generally one weekday per week or every other Saturday

No previous museum experience is required. An interest in trains, engineering, local history, education, or museums is a bonus—but enthusiasm for people and a willingness to learn are what matter most.

Come help us welcome our community, share Plano’s history, and keep the stories of the Interurban Railway moving forward!
