    Description

    Gain a real hands-on medical laboratory experience in Ghana with SMWEF. Interns are placed in hospitals, clinic laboratories and research institutions to shadow qualified professionals and assist with diagnostics. SMWEF Ghana Biomedical/laboratory internship program provides hands-on experience in research, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and health science applications, giving interns the skills needed for careers as biochemists, laboratory analysists, and scientific researchers.

    Ghana is a home to top -tier laboratories, hospitals, clinics, and research institutions, providing an ideal environment for interns to gain a real practical hands-on experience and professional mentorship.

    Whether you are a premed students, graduates, lab science students, postdoc student, lab medical technician or professional seeking to practice and launch your biochemistry career, SMWEF Ghana laboratory assistant internship program provides a strong foundation for personal and professional growth as an intern.

    As a medical laboratory assistant technician or intern in Ghana with SMWEF, you'll:

    1. Observe and assist with handling and preparing of blood, stool, and other pathological specimens under supervision.
    2. Gain exposure to hematology, chemistry, parasitology, microbiology, and serelogy units.
    3. Maintain a safe and tidy work area and follow safety procedures.
    4. Collect, receive, evaluate and process various biological specimen for analysis.
    5. Perform laboratory tests accurately and in a timely manner to produce reliable test results.
    6. Review and verify test results, confirm panic values and abnormal results before release to clinicians.
    7. Maintain and keep updated records of all laboratory investigations and procedures.

    Interns can use this program as an academic credits for their college/university applications and studies. Hospital and clinic laboratory staff can help sign off any paperwork required by your university, college, or course tutors during and/or after your internship program in Ghana at the hospital.

    As a biomedical/medical laboratory technician intern, your roles and duties may vary depending on your qualifications and experience.

    This program is a year-round with flexible start dates and duration. Interns can choose when to start depending on their schedules.

    How to Volunteer for This Opportunity

    • Interns/volunteers on this program must be 18 years and above on the program start date and duration (under age interns must have their parents consent by contact SMWEF Ghana either via telephone or email before we can offer them placement).
    • Fluent in English
    • Interns must have at least a high school educational background.
    • No prior requirement is required for this program, but medical laboratory placement interns must have relevant biomedical/laboratory training and certification or should be currently studying medical laboratory.
    • Must be able to adapt to the environment and be flexible to learn and experience the culture in Ghana.
