    Description

    Volunteer Helping Urban Wildlife

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Newark, CA. Each year, we care for hundreds of injured and orphaned native wildlife, and your support helps make that possible. Since our opening we have taken in over 28,000 animals for care.

Our busy season runs from April through October, and our patients rely on consistent daily care. We ask volunteers to commit to one 3.5‑hour shift on the same day and time each week, three times a month. We understand that life includes vacations and other commitments, so we do our best to be flexible with scheduling. Orientation classes are held online in late March and April.

    Current shift times are:

      • Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday: 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
      • Wednesday and Friday: 10:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Please note that shift times may adjust during the season to meet patient needs.

    Requirements

    • Be at least 18 years of age.
    • Commit to at least one 3.5-hour shift on the same day and time each week, 3 times a month.
    • You must have the ability to stand, kneel, bend over, and twist when cleaning animal enclosures.
    • Willingness to clean, messy animal enclosures.
    • Attend a 90 minute orientation class online through Google Meet in March or April.
    • Apply on line at https://ohlonehumanesociety.org/volunteer/

Volunteer responsibilities include preparing species‑specific meals, cleaning enclosures, doing laundry, and washing dishes.

We care for a wide variety of native wildlife—far too many to list! Recent patients include raccoons, squirrels, opossums, skunks, foxes, and many species of California native birds. We also treat waterfowl such as egrets, ducks, geese, and herons, along with raptors including barn owls, great horned owls, and hawks.
