    Description

Soccer Individual Skills Volunteers assist with the soccer skills competitions. Volunteers help create a positive, encouraging, and organized competition environment while supporting athletes as they demonstrate their soccer skills.

No advanced soccer experience is required. Volunteers will receive instructions and training on their assigned station before competition begins.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Assist with the setup and preparation of the Individual Skills competition area.
    • Welcome and encourage athletes as they arrive at their assigned station.
    • Assist athletes in moving through the competition area as directed by event staff.
    • Help administer the Individual Skills events, which may include:
      • Dribbling
      • Shooting
      • Run & Kick
    • Place or retrieve soccer balls and other equipment as needed.
    • Keep track of athlete scores, times, or attempts according to the station's instructions.
    • Help ensure athletes understand where to start and finish each skill.
    • Provide positive encouragement and support to athletes throughout their competition.
    • Help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming competition area.
    • Communicate any questions, concerns, or unusual situations to the Skills Coordinator or Competition Staff.
    • Assist with resetting equipment between athletes and divisions.
    • Support a smooth transition of athletes between skills stations.

    Ideal Volunteer

    The ideal volunteer is:

    • Positive, patient, and encouraging.
    • Comfortable interacting with athletes of varying abilities.
    • Dependable and willing to follow event procedures.
    • Able to work as part of a team.
    • Comfortable standing and moving around for extended periods.
    • Familiar with soccer skills is helpful but not required.

    Important Volunteer Expectations

Volunteers should focus on encouraging athletes and supporting their independence. Volunteers should allow athletes to perform each skill to the best of their ability and provide assistance only when directed by competition staff.

Volunteers are expected to follow Special Olympics Maine policies, safety procedures, and the direction of competition staff throughout the event.

    Time Commitment

Typically a competition-day volunteer position. Volunteers should arrive prior to the start of competition for orientation, station assignments, and event setup. The exact schedule will vary by competition.

    Why Volunteer?

Soccer Individual Skills Volunteers play an important role in creating a meaningful competition experience for every athlete. Your encouragement, enthusiasm, and support help athletes demonstrate their abilities, build confidence, and experience the joy of competition.
