Seeking Literacy Volunteers (Kearny & Online)

Looking for a meaningful way to connect and create change in our community?

Literacy NJ West Hudson is an adult education non-profit seeking volunteer tutors to teach English language, basic literacy, and basic computer skills. Some volunteers may also support students seeking their high school equivalency or preparing for their citizenship exam. Students are aged 18+.

We are a community of curious, caring, and open-minded individuals who are dedicated to making free adult education services available to our neighbors. Will you join us?

Your year-long commitment starts with training and orientation. Throughout the year, you’ll have access to mentorship and peer-to-peer support. Teaching materials and curriculum guidance are provided.

    Responsibilities:

    • Dedicate four hours per week to tutoring a small group of students.
    • Create interesting lessons using the structure provided by your textbook and our curriculum guidance.
    • Develop your tutoring practice with the support of staff & peers.

    Qualifications:

    • Curiosity: A desire to learn and explore with your students.
    • Kindness: A compassionate and supportive attitude toward your peers and neighbors.
    • Commitment: A willingness to dedicate your time and skills to help others.
    • Communication: Good communication skills, both in teaching and interacting with students.

    Benefits:

    • Impact: Witness the growth and success of your students as they develop their literacy skills and reach their personal goals.
    • Growth: Enhance your teaching, creativity, and communication skills while building strong connections with your community.
    • Ongoing support and feedback from experienced tutors.
