    Description

    BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 25 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

    SCOPE OF WORK: Under the supervision of Senior Education Specialist, Job Readiness Specialist Volunteer will assist refugees in learning U.S. workforce norms, expectations in the workplace, and comprehension on how to thrive financially in the U.S. This role will be responsible for the implementation of classes that involve Job Readiness Training, Advanced Work Readiness, Digital Literacy, Financial Literacy, Vocational ESL, and supplementary workshops. This position will directly support and assist Senior Education Specialist’s efforts in supporting clients to build essential skills and increase financial capabilities while tracking progress towards outcomes and consistently working collaboratively between the IRC staff and common Community Business Organizations.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    General responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Assist with delivery and presentation of Job Readiness Training class sessions via Zoom or other videoconferencing app;
    • Maintain accurate attendance records for sessions;
    • Communicate effectively with clients and the Senior Educational Specialist;
    • Assist with updates to presentation materials as needed;
    • Assist with ESL (English as a Second Language) class sessions and maintain accurate attendance records;
    • Create and maintain documentation of JRT activities required by SETA (Sacramento Employment and Training Agency), e.g. PEST forms;
    • Help assess clients English level using one of the standardized assessment platforms (CASAS, Best Plus, others).

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Professional demeanor with clients and employees;
    • Patient and caring attitude toward clients;
    • Knowledge of basic job readiness skills and/or resume writing standards;
    • Customer service, tutoring, or instruction background a plus;
    • Reliability and flexibility;
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural, team-based environment;
    • Digital fluency with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other online platforms;
    • Availability during IRC’s standard business hours (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) is required.
