    Description

About The J Healthcare Initiative The J Healthcare Initiative is a registered Canadian non-profit organization on a mission to prevent overdoses through community- and evidence-based initiatives that uplift youth and local communities. We work to address the toxic drug crisis by empowering drug users' healthcare choices, building infrastructure for safe supply, and advocating for policies rooted in dignity, respect, and universal healthcare access.

Role Overview We are seeking a passionate Public Relations Specialist to help increase our organization’s visibility and elevate our policy impact in Canada and at the United Nations level. This role is crucial in shaping public perception and advancing our mission through effective communication strategies that center the voices of youth, people who use drugs, and affected local communities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Strategic Communications: Develop and implement PR strategies aligned with our mission, ensuring representation of diverse community voices.
    • Media Production & Distribution: Write and distribute press releases, media statements, and op-eds highlighting the experiences of people who use drugs, people living with HIV, and Indigenous communities.
    • Media & Stakeholder Relations: Build relationships with journalists and media outlets, and arrange interviews for JHI representatives—prioritizing spokespersons with lived experience.
    • Spokesperson Preparation: Prepare JHI representatives, including peer advocates and youth leaders, for media interactions and public speaking engagements.
    • Crisis Management & Monitoring: Maintain a community-informed crisis communication plan, monitor media coverage, and coordinate with the social media team for consistent messaging.

    Qualifications

    • Strong understanding of harm reduction principles, youth-centered advocacy, and drug policy issues.
    • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a commitment to respectful, non-stigmatizing storytelling.
    • Experience in media relations, grassroots advocacy, or crisis communications.
    • Commitment to JHI’s mission; formal education in PR, Communications, or Journalism is an asset but not required.

    Role Details & Benefits

    • Time Commitment: Flexible, approximately 5–10 hours per week (remote).
    • Impact & Growth: Shape Canadian and global drug policy, build advocacy skills, and network with leading healthcare professionals and community advocates.

How to Apply Please send your resume, a brief cover letter, and any relevant work or advocacy samples to volunteer@j-initiative.org with the subject line "Volunteer PR Specialist Application."
