    Description

    Intake Coordinator - Role Overview

As an Intake Coordinator for The Rescue Crew, you'll play a critical part in saving lives. You're the bridge between animals in need and their second chance. Whether it's evaluating a pet at a shelter, responding to an owner seeking help, or coordinating logistics for a rescue, your work directly impacts who we can help—and when.

You'll build and maintain relationships with shelters, impounds, rescue partners, and community members, assessing potential intakes and coordinating foster placement. While it can be emotionally challenging to see the volume of animals needing help, it's also one of the most rewarding roles in rescue.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Evaluate incoming intake requests (from shelters, tribal lands, owner surrenders, etc.) and determine if we have capacity to assist.
    • Visit local impounds/shelters to assess animals, take photos, gather medical/behavioral info, and perform basic temperament evaluations.
    • Coordinate with fosters and Placement Coordinators to secure safe placement for incoming animals.
    • Maintain relationships with assigned shelters/impounds or surrender sources and act as their primary point of contact.
    • Communicate intake status and provide updates in shared systems and email groups.
    • Ensure intake documentation (photos, notes, medical records) is collected and shared for internal tracking and website updates.
    • Help arrange or assist with transport when an animal is accepted into the rescue.

    Preferred Skills & Qualifications

    • Compassion, resilience, and a passion for animal welfare
    • Comfortable handling dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes
    • Experience with animal shelters or rescue work (preferred, not required)
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to manage sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism
    • Basic understanding of animal behavior and health concerns (training provided)
    • Access to a smartphone (for communication/photos) and basic computer skills (email, Google Drive)
    • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation

    Bonus if you...

    • Have knowledge or experience with bully breeds
    • Are familiar with tribal reservation intake dynamics
    • Have previously volunteered with The Rescue Crew or another rescue organization
    • Can commit to visiting shelters weekly or bi-weekly

    Position Type: Volunteer

    Reports To: Intake Manager

Location: Remote with local travel to shelters/impounds as needed

Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per week (flexible); some weekend availability required
