Board Member
Organization
Pets and People Humane Society
Mission
Board Members are responsible for supporting the mission of the organization by providing leadership, governance, strategic direction, financial oversight, and community engagement. Board Members serve as ambassadors for the organization and work collaboratively to ensure the long-term success of the rescue and the animals it serves.
Term of Service
- Two-year term (renewable)
- Attend regular board meetings (monthly or as scheduled)
- Attend annual meeting and strategic planning sessions
Primary Responsibilities
Governance
- Support and uphold the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Establish policies and provide strategic direction.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws applicable to nonprofit organizations.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding board discussions and organizational matters.
Financial Oversight
- Review and approve annual budgets.
- Monitor the organization’s financial health.
- Support responsible stewardship of donations and assets.
- Participate in fundraising efforts.
Fundraising & Community Outreach
- Serve as an ambassador for the organization.
- Assist with donor cultivation and community partnerships.
- Participate in fundraising events and campaigns.
- Promote the organization’s programs through professional and personal networks.
Organizational Support
- Attend and actively participate in board meetings.
- Serve on at least one committee when possible.
- Offer professional skills and expertise to advance organizational goals.
- Assist in identifying opportunities for growth and improvement.
Ethical Standards
Board Members agree to:
- Act in the best interests of the organization.
- Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts.
- Treat volunteers, staff, adopters, donors, and fellow board members with professionalism and respect.
- Support board decisions once they have been made, even when opinions differ during discussion.
Attendance Expectations
Board Members are expected to:
- Attend at least 75% of scheduled board meetings annually.
- Notify the Board President in advance if unable to attend.
- Participate in committee work and organizational events whenever possible.
Desired Qualifications
- Passion for animal welfare.
- Commitment to the mission of the organization.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience in one or more of the following is preferred:
- Finance or accounting
- Fundraising
- Marketing and communications
- Legal
- Veterinary medicine
- Human resources
- Construction or facilities
- Business management
- Nonprofit leadership
- Event planning
Time Commitment
Approximately 5–10 hours per month, including:
- Board meetings
- Committee meetings
- Organizational events
- Volunteer activities
- Community outreach
Board Member Expectations
Each Board Member agrees to:
- Make the organization’s mission a priority.
- Support fundraising initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Exercise sound judgment.
- Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials in advance.
- Participate respectfully in discussions.
- Work collaboratively with fellow board members and staff.
- Advocate for responsible and humane animal welfare practices.
Compensation
Board Members serve as volunteers and receive no financial compensation. Reimbursement for approved organizational expenses may be available in accordance with organizational policy.
