Change a Life, One Word at a Time: Adult Literacy Tutor

As a Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor, you will be paired with an adult learner to help them build essential language skills. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a tangible, lasting difference in someone’s life. Whether your learner is working toward a high school equivalency diploma, looking to improve their job prospects, or trying to navigate everyday tasks like reading medical labels or helping their children with homework, your guidance will unlock new opportunities for them.

Key Responsibilities:

• Meet one-on-one with your assigned learner for 1.5 to 2 hours per week.
• Work together on practical goals like reading comprehension, writing, pronunciation, or vocabulary development.
• Incorporate everyday, real-world materials (news articles, job applications, digital tools) to keep lessons practical and engaging.
• Maintain a supportive, patient, and encouraging learning environment.
• Briefly track and report learner progress through our online tracking platform.

Qualifications

You don’t need a background in teaching or linguistics to be a great tutor! We provide all the training, curriculum materials, and ongoing support you need to be successful.

What we look for:

• A strong command of the English language.
• Patience, empathy, and a deep respect for diverse cultures and life experiences.
• Reliability and a commitment to your learner's success.
• Comfort with using a computer (like checking emails or navigating an online reporting platform).
• Must be 24 years or older and able to pass a standard background check.

Time Commitment & Location

• Commitment: We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 year to ensure consistency and build a strong rapport with your learner.
• Hours: Flexible schedules based on your and your learner's mutual availability (mornings, afternoons, or evenings).
• Location: Tutoring sessions take place in a public, accessible setting—primarily at the Newport Beach Public Library, depending on your learner's needs.

Training & Support Provided

We set our volunteers up for success. You will receive an initial Volunteer Tutor Training session covering adult learning principles, Roles & Goals, and lesson planning. You will also have direct access to our staff Literacy Coordinator and a wealth of color-coded reading resources, lesson plans, and specialized curricula.
