Are you looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others? Do you have a compassionate heart and would like to give back to your community? Then we invite you to join the Unity Hospice Volunteer Team, where you can bring comfort and peace to those in need. We are looking for volunteers in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
Every moment matters and our volunteers play a vital role in providing compassionate care and emotional support to our patients and their families. Whether it's offering a listening ear, reading a book or sharing a caring smile while holding their hands, your presence can make a world of difference. Caregivers can use breaks to prevent burnout and do some self-care - sometimes a volunteer can help just by sitting quietly in a home to provide peace of mind!
If visits aren't for you, we can also use Administrative support at our office at 3234 S King Dr. in Chicago, or you can become a Craft volunteer where you can make cards, crochet lap blankets, sew fidget mats and many other things that can help make our patients feel special and cared for.
Every act of kindness can provide so much comfort and joy. If you're ready to make a meaningful difference we'd love to hear from you. Together we can bring dignity, support and love to those who need it the most. Thank you for considering Unity Hospice as your place to volunteer.
No experience is required, we provide training and support to ensure that you feel confident and prepared. A background check and Tb & drug test (for drugs not legal in IL) is provided as well.
Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with Unity Hospice! Our volunteers do incredible work to help our patients and families navigate the end-of-life journey with the care and support they need. From relieving a caregiver so they can take a much-needed break or helping to care for patient pets – walking the dog or caring for the cat, to spending time with patients reading, singing, talking, or listening, to helping with behind the scenes work in our office - volunteers play an essential role in our team and help us go above and beyond with our clients. We serve our patients wherever they call home, be it their own home, the home of a relative, or a nursing, assisted or independent living facility. Patient Support volunteers will need to be willing to travel to the sites where patients live, as providing comfort in the location of their choice is part of the hospice model. Our administrative volunteers will primarily work out of our Chicago office at 3232 S King Dr.
We don’t require our volunteers to have any experience with hospice or healthcare – all it takes to be a good hospice volunteer is empathy, kindness, reliability and good listening skills. We will train our volunteers to work through any issues they may encounter. In order to volunteer, an applicant must be willing to get a tb test and drug test for drugs not legal in IL, as well as a background check that requires fingerprinting (all of which we will pay for). Volunteers must complete our online and in-person training and be willing to commit for at least a year to working with Unity (to give our patients consistency and justify the costs of onboarding).
If joining Unity interests you and you’d like to move forward as a volunteer, please complete this Volunteer Application, and email us a few days/times that you could meet up for an interview (Ideally between 9 and 5, M-F, although we can occasionally accommodate if it needs to be outside those hours, or if it needs to be a virtual meeting rather than in person).
Thanks again, and we look forward to hearing from you!
