Gentiva Hospice is seeking Veteran Volunteers to provide compassionate support to fellow veterans receiving hospice care. This special role connects those who have served with patients who share a similar military background, offering camaraderie, understanding, and dignity at the end of life.
Role Overview
Veteran Volunteers play a meaningful role in recognizing and honoring the service of hospice patients who are veterans. Through companionship and participation in recognition activities, volunteers help ensure that no veteran feels forgotten.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Provide companionship visits to veteran patients
- Engage in conversation, sharing stories, or simply offering presence
- Participate in veteran recognition ceremonies (e.g., pinning ceremonies)
- Offer emotional support to patients and their families
- Assist hospice staff in identifying veteran-specific needs when appropriate
- Help create a respectful and comforting environment
Ideal Candidate
- Must be a U.S. military veteran (all branches welcome)
- Demonstrates respect, empathy, and compassion
- Strong listening and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable interacting with individuals facing serious illness
- Dependable and able to maintain confidentiality (HIPAA training provided)
Training & Support
- Orientation to hospice philosophy and care
- Guidance on supporting patients at end of life
- Ongoing support from hospice team and volunteer coordinator
