    Description

    Mental Health Team Advocate (MHTA)

    TROA Mental Health Division

Remote | Flexible Schedule | Volunteer

    Date Posted: August 2026

    Gaming. Community. Mental Health.

TROA is looking for gamers who care about people to join our Mental Health Division as Mental Health Team Advocates (MHTAs).

This volunteer peer-support role brings together gaming, Discord, community, and mental health awareness. Our advocates help create an environment where members can game, connect, build friendships, and know there are people willing to listen when life gets difficult.

No previous mental health or peer-support experience is required. Training will be provided.

    What You'll Do

    • Engage with members through Discord and TROA gaming communities.
    • Provide supportive, person-to-person conversation through active listening, encouragement, and connection.
    • Help maintain a positive, welcoming, inclusive, and stigma-free gaming environment.
    • Participate in gaming events, community activities, and mental health initiatives.
    • Recognize when someone may need additional assistance and help connect them with appropriate resources.
    • Participate in team training and operational check-ins.
    • Help develop new ways to bring gaming, community, and mental health awareness together.

    What We're Looking For

    • Enjoy gaming and understand gaming communities and culture.
    • Have working knowledge of Discord and how to use the platform.
    • Comfortable navigating Discord channels, voice channels, DMs, roles, and other community features.
    • Strong communication and active-listening skills.
    • Compassionate, respectful, and approachable.
    • Able to remain calm and supportive during sensitive conversations.
    • Dependable and willing to work as part of a team.
    • Passionate about helping others and building a stronger gaming community.

Experience in mental health advocacy, moderation, community management, nonprofits, or peer support is helpful but not required.

    Training Will Be Provided

Every Mental Health Team Advocate will receive training and guidance to prepare for the role.

    Training may include:

    • Peer-support fundamentals and active listening.
    • Mental health awareness and stigma reduction.
    • Appropriate advocate boundaries.
    • Recognizing when additional professional assistance may be needed.
    • Referral and escalation procedures.
    • Discord and TROA community procedures.
    • First Contact Program procedures, when applicable.
    • Ongoing team guidance and development.

We don't expect you to know everything when you join. We're looking for people who care, are willing to learn, and want to make a difference.

    First Contact Program

Trained advocates may also have the opportunity to participate in TROA's First Contact Program, providing an initial peer-support connection when a community member reaches out for support.

Advocates listen, offer support, and help connect members with appropriate resources when needed.

First Contact is not a crisis line or emergency-response service. Advocates are not expected to act as therapists, counselors, or emergency responders. Training, procedures, and ongoing guidance will be provided to advocates participating in the program.

    What You'll Gain

As an MHTA, you'll have the opportunity to develop practical experience in:

Peer Support | Mental Health Advocacy | Gaming Communities | Discord Community Management | Active Listening | Community Outreach | Leadership | Nonprofit Operations

You'll also have opportunities to contribute ideas and help shape TROA's growing mental health programs.

    Position Details

    Location: Remote

    Position Type: Volunteer / Unpaid

    Schedule: Flexible based on availability

    Training: Provided

Meetings: Periodic training and team check-ins

This is a non-clinical peer-support role. Mental Health Team Advocates do not provide therapy, diagnoses, medical advice, or professional crisis intervention. When someone needs professional or emergency assistance, advocates help direct them toward appropriate external resources.

    Game With Purpose

Gaming is more than entertainment. It creates friendships, communities, and places where people can belong.

TROA wants to use those connections to build a gaming community where conversations about mental health are welcomed and people know there is someone willing to listen.

If you're a gamer, understand Discord, care about mental health, and want to make a positive difference in the gaming community, we'd love to hear from you.

Game. Connect. Support. Make a difference.
