    Position Overview

Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Volunteers are appointed by the court in cases involving custody, guardianship, adoption, divorce, or paternity disputes. They ensure children’s best interests are represented during high-conflict family matters and provide consistent support. GAL volunteers work under the supervision of a staff GAL supervisor, adhering to legal guidelines and agency standards.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct monthly in-person visits with the assigned child and additional phone or virtual check-ins as needed.
    • Communicate regularly with parents, attorneys, DCS case managers, and service providers.
    • Attend court hearings, mediations, and Child and Family Team Meetings (CFTMs).
    • Gather and review relevant records, evaluations, and reports.
    • Prepare written court reports that provide factual, well-supported recommendations.
    • Use the Optima data system to log all case activity and maintain confidentiality.

    Requirements

    • Completion of 12 hours of initial training (including 5 hours pre-work) and 6 hours of annual continuing education.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Analytical skills to evaluate complex family and legal situations.
    • Adherence to GAL program guidelines and ethical boundaries (e.g., transportation of clients is not permitted).

    Commitments

    • Commit approximately 25 hours per case, including visits, hearings, documentation, and preparation.
    • Maintain at least two contacts per month with the staff GAL supervisor for updates and mentorship.
    • Participate in ongoing case review meetings as needed.

    Supervision and Support

GAL volunteers are supervised by the staff GAL to whom they are assigned, with regular communication (at least twice monthly). Volunteers receive mentorship, case guidance, and access to legal resources through the Kids’ Voice team.

    Success Indicators

Success is measured by consistent child contact, timely and accurate court reports, compliance with court and agency guidelines, and effective advocacy in court.
