    Description

    Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. From our humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, we have evolved to be one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 20,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants more than 40 wishes each day throughout the U.S. and its territories.

    Position Summary

    A speaker’s bureau volunteer will present key information and share stories regarding Make-A-Wish to community organizations, corporations, schools and internal or external events. Through these efforts the speaker’s bureau volunteer will act as a key player in increasing the audience’s awareness and support for Make-A-Wish.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Verbally communicate important Make-A-Wish facts and figures at community and corporate events, social gatherings and internal events.
    • Share wish stories transmitting the impact of a wish with key constituents and the general public.
    • Attend check presentations to show appreciation to supporters and donors for their support of our mission.
    • Engage supporters through energetic, informative public speaking while emphasizing the importance and meaning of the Make-A-Wish mission throughout the community.
    • Demonstrate and maintain a strong understanding of the history, mission, vision and impact of Make-A-Wish.
    • Complete and submit any post-speaking engagement feedback in a timely manner according to chapter guidelines.
    • Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to speak in public with confident, enthusiastic and professional energy.
    • Excellent people skills with the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Flexible schedule and willingness to drive up to one hour for speaking engagements.
    • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Proficient in Word and PowerPoint.
    • Bilingual abilities in spoken form a plus.

    Location of Opportunity

    Speaking engagements may take place in a variety of locations throughout the chapter’s territory at varying times of the day. Chapter staff will provide detailed information about the opportunity prior to signing up for a specific opportunity. The volunteer is responsible for confirming with the chapter and event contact any specifics regarding location, time and appropriate attire.

    Volunteer Commitment

    • The average speaking engagement lasts anywhere from ten minutes to one hour. Each engagement will vary greatly depending on the organization and event.
    • Agree to speak at a minimum of two events per year.
    • If accepting donations on behalf of the chapter, individual must complete criminal background check every 3 years and Conflict of Interest & Ethics Assurance Statement annually.
    • Complete official Make-A-Wish Speaker’s Bureau training.
    • Attend continuing education courses, as offered by Make-A-Wish chapter staff.
    • Provide and receive ongoing performance evaluation feedback from chapter staff.
