About Liberato
Liberato is a project of the Center for Online Safety and Liberty (COSL), providing Offshore Free Speech Hosting designed to protect expression and privacy in a climate of increasing censorship and surveillance.
We are secure, privacy-first, and pro-creator — independent of major cloud providers and committed to upholding three pillars:
- Privacy guaranteed – through encryption, offshore jurisdiction, and minimal logging.
- Freedom of expression protected – supporting creators, activists, and communities who need resilient hosting.
- Trust and safety upheld – ensuring responsible and legal content moderation without compromising users’ rights.
Liberato runs on a self-hosted infrastructure using Proxmox for VM orchestration, Ceph for distributed storage, CyberPanel and LiteSpeed for web hosting, and WHMCS for automated provisioning and billing.
About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Manager (Volunteer) to help oversee all aspects of Liberato’s hosting infrastructure and service delivery. You’ll be collaborating with the project lead (and a small technical team) to maintain and improve our systems, ensuring that Liberato remains a secure and reliable refuge for creators and organizations needing safe, censorship-resistant hosting.
This role offers significant autonomy and the opportunity to help build a technically sophisticated hosting platform aligned with human rights and digital freedom values.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and optimize the Proxmox + Ceph cluster for VM performance and redundancy.
- Manage CyberPanel servers and hosted applications (LiteSpeed, WHMCS, Docker).
- Assist with system upgrades, migrations, and monitoring (e.g., Proxmox, Ceph, TLS/FQDN setup).
- Set up and manage secondary DNS, firewalls, SSL certificates, and network security.
- Contribute to infrastructure automation using Cloud-Init, Kamal, or related tools.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and internal procedures.
- Enforce trust and safety measures (e.g., site-level CSAM scanning and content policies).
- Provide occasional client support or technical onboarding in coordination with the Liberato team.
Requirements
- Experience with Linux system administration (preferably Debian/Ubuntu).
- Familiarity with Proxmox, Ceph, Docker, or similar virtualization/cluster technologies.
- Comfort with web server environments (LiteSpeed, Nginx, Apache, CyberPanel).
- Understanding of DNS, SSL/TLS, and general web hosting architecture.
- (Optional but desirable) Experience with WHMCS.
- Strong sense of responsibility and alignment with COSL’s mission to promote digital freedom and safety.
Commitment and Benefits
- Commitment: Flexible, approximately 5–10 hours per week.
- Location: Remote (global applicants welcome).
- Compensation: This is a volunteer position, but a sales commission is available for new hosting and VM client referrals.
You will gain hands-on experience managing a complex, privacy-oriented hosting stack; collaborate with digital rights professionals; and contribute to one of the few hosting initiatives dedicated to protecting online expression and autonomy.
